Best smoker barges 1-5 large [Vol 13]
Discussion
Most certainly not a barge, but a no frills and seemingly “as new” 987. In a world of 9 speed DCT transmissions, twin scroll and variable boost turbos, EPAS and god knows what else, this car will feel like the ultimate cut back sports car. It kind of is, heated seats, three pedals, NA flat six and a roof that comes off. You can get one a lot cheaper but probably not one this nice - and like most of our beloved barges, they aren’t making any more!

That model of 3 series is my last favourite ever. I can find no visual redeeming features at all.
It’s a timeless design. They came out in the late 80s yet still look many times more modern than the E30 (which looks handsome mind you) yet not as timeless as an E46 Coupe LCI in black.sleepera6 said:

I’m on the train to pick up my three bags of sand X350! Picking up a new interesting car, especially a barge with some risk involved, is the closest I get to that Christmas Eve feeling I had as a kid.
I hope it doesn’t turn out to be shagged/slow/st

The 745 is in with the man to try and sort out the lumpy idle, i'm replacing the cam position sensors and the vanos solenoids, which is a bit of an educated punt. There are a fair few posts of similar symptom cars being sorted by replacing either of those, and they are cheap to do so I thought "why not, i'll do the lot!"
Got the usual rolling eyes from the garage when they asked how I diagnosed the issue and I told them the internet It does amuse me how they are always so certain that any information on the internet is always total rubbish, and the only diagnosis that means anything is from a garage...
Fingers crossed I can be a smug fker when I pick it up

Given the other option is lunacy to fix, it's a no brainer.
Are they a specialist? I'd expect them to at least be aware of the variable valve lift issues with the N62.
They are. We did have a chat about the next option, which was vanos adjusters, but even that is in the not worth it bucket, so it's either this... Or a lumpy idle Are they a specialist? I'd expect them to at least be aware of the variable valve lift issues with the N62.

It has to be an electrical problem, not a mechanical one, as when it happens you have to drive it for a bit, leave it for a bit, then when you drive it again it is smooth as butter. As the car warms up it makes no difference, you have to turn it off and on again after you have driven for a bit.
If it was mechanical then the characteristics would change as the car warms up, and you wouldn't have times where it is absolutely smooth, and other random times where it is lumpy as fk.
That's my opinion anyway, but what do I know!
