Annoyingly it was totally fine this morning as I drove it there, so I won't know how smug I can be for a while...

It has to be an electrical problem, not a mechanical one, as when it happens you have to drive it for a bit, leave it for a bit, then when you drive it again it is smooth as butter. As the car warms up it makes no difference, you have to turn it off and on again after you have driven for a bit.
If it was mechanical then the characteristics would change as the car warms up, and you wouldn't have times where it is absolutely smooth, and other random times where it is lumpy as fk.

That's my opinion anyway, but what do I know!
Already had the phone call this morning. "Are you sure you want to waste your money doing this, we've done our tests and we recommend rebuilding the vanos, as that will fix it"
biggrin

I await correction from better beards, but those were the standard wheels for post-1999 XJRs after they brought in the option of the R1 performance pack.

ETA: Yes, it was the update for 2000 - it also brought a slightly different engine control, rain sensing wipers, stereo etc.

The original Penta design are the best imho.

I've got it! Obligatory shot, it took 70 litres:

Only got to drive 9 miles so fat but first impressions very positive. These Pirelli P Zero Assimetrico tyres cleary prefer the warm, it took real care not to dramatically spin up the rear wheels pulling off on wet roads at 5C. Loads of tread on them too, and they aren't old. Ride is better than I thought on the test drive and is very smooth.

I even got the adjustable pedals working, they were frozen in place after presumably 15 years of never being adjusted but clicking it back and forth a dozen times freed it up.

Shifts from 1st to 2nd thump more than they probably did in 2003. Fluid was changed 50k miles/3 years ago for ZF lifeguard so that may want doing again. All other shifts and downshifts have been perfect so far.

Need to fix the lifting trim at the window bottoms of front and rear doors where they meet the B pillar. Bonnet shut lines are very "jaguar" but they told me it's had a new wing at some point so that might need tweaking.

I'll start a readers cars thread later, when I'm in a hotel with nothing to do but read my cars handbook, think about my car, look at pictures of my car, and post threads about my car hehe

I'm feeling quite smug right now. Doubtless it'll explode into a shower of springs and oily bits later.

For what it's worth, when I adjusted the minimum valve lift from the 0.1mm all the way up to 0.8mm it noticeably improved with the increments.

Cold starts were also noticeably smoother so there's definitely a mechanical element relating to the overall smoothness of the engine.

If that were an aeroplane engine - by and large they are extremely non-electronic - I would suspect an intermittently sticking valve rather than any electrical problem

Also, another symptom, if you unplug the vanos sensor the problem goes away completely. (but then you have a nice cascade of warning lights to put up with on the dash). I'm tempted just to run with it unplugged if the work today doesn't make any difference biggrin

Don't forget to work out the maintenance timeline from the pile of receipts you hopefully got with it. smile

I thought I was the only one who did that sort of thing.

Unless someone else wants to do it (it took me about 5h last time for the last vol.), I’ll do it over the weekend.

I have a feeling that there’s been more purchases in this volume already than the whole of the last - if not, it certainly feels that way.

With regards to the ‘car club’, I’ve not formally solicited HarryKul or E24man, still thinking about how to make it fair for all. I think I might have to start an advice thread in SPL to get some feedback - watch this space (maybe?). Oh, and any potentially interested parties, just let me know?

I have taken the history out of the car to take back with me tonight for that very purpose.

In other good news the in car phone works and there is a SIM left in there that is either contract or has PAYG credit on it. Now that's tested and the pedals are fixed I can official state that everything works on this car!

I'm home with the 745...

... and she is running sweet as a nut! Early days, but I had no lumpiness or hesitation at all on the way home.

Ended up only doing the camshaft sensors in the end, as the chinese special solenoids I picked up on the cheap were cheap for a reason, 2mm too big to fit. biggrin I'll send them back with a strongly worded email. £60 they cost me! The man cleaned up the old ones and refitted them, but he said they looked in good condition and there was no gunk on the gauze, which is nice. The camshaft sensors were the originals from new, so there is a chance they had gone bad, but like I say, still too early to say really.
Also fitted the headlight position sensor PB gave me with the car, so that's that sorted too, so currently she has no jobs outstanding as far as I can tell.

I'll report back on the lumpy idle if it re-appears. The man told me to just remove the connector for the vanos if that happens, and it'll bypass the vanos, and "cure" the issue. I'll be a bit down on power (but I think a 4.4l V8 can handle that) and have the engine management warning light on, but he has people who run with it disconnected for years with no issue. Nice to have a backup plan in place at least.

Perhaps for 2019 a running total in the thread might/would be better.

That's reminded me of something I disconnected, wonder if it's the same thing we're meaning. It was the sensors for the valvetronic actuators, towards the rear of the engine, not the VANOS.

I'd forgotten that's what led me to believe it was definitely the valvetronic as the issue. I ran it like that for a week or so to be sure last winter and it was a night and day difference.
