RE: Driven: BMW 640d Coupe
Discussion
Right. Well I have been loaned a car for the day by my local dealer Barons (good bunch by the way).
Sadly I am a bit back-to-back today to get the most out of it, but my initial impressions (coming from an M6 and a 320d):
Looks great. This example is I think Carbon black (slightly blue tint) M Sport with the optional 20" wheels. It looks great, but there is no doubt it is a pretty large car. For me, the biggest improvement is to the back of the car, losing the "table-top" boot lid.
So far I have only done a bit of A/B and dual carriage-way. The way the car picks up speed and acceleration from such low revs is laugh out loud good. Whereas the M6 needs revs, this just goes from nowhere. Having 8 (incredibly seamless) gears I guess also helps. Having said this, it isn't all at the bottom though - it is the most revvy diesel I have ever experienced and really doesn't sound bad at all; not sounding strained all the way to 5k.
Despite driving the car VERY hard for an hour, it is still showing 36+ mpg. I reset it and did 10 miles and easily got the claimed combined at a 65mpg cruise (50).
The quality of the interior really shines through, every bit matching similar priced cars in the class.
I would say it feels no less nimble or large than the M6. Possibly slightly lighter steering, but this weights up nicely in sport.
Dont get me wrong, money no object the latest M6 would be on order, but I dont have 100k to spend, and given the fact I do more miles now, the 640d makes a great case for its self - fabulous performance (5.5 to 60 is hardly shabby), easily attained performance without having to rev the nuts off it, and a very decent range.
Add to that 130 quid tax, and a lease deal of 600 quid (inc vat 12k pa), and I'm really struggling to see a better all round car for the (lease) money.
Loving the surround view stuff too.
Will report a bit later.

one question i have to ask on the 6 series though....it's the same price of a 7 series but with the drawbacks of very little leg room in comparison and a smaller boot.
what do you think the 6 offers over the 7 for the loss of practicality?
just looks i suppose???
Looks hands down - not really loving the shape of the 7 - think the 6 looks much nicer.what do you think the 6 offers over the 7 for the loss of practicality?

Likewise the interior. The 6 is 200kg's lighter than the 7 as well as being cheaper.
I don't need the space, so the 7 isn't really on the radar.

That's what my car will look like except that I have the 19"s not the 20s"
Can't wait!!
When is it here?Can't wait!!
I have two cars on offer at the moment. Black on Black with 20 inch wheels and Deep Sea Blue on Ivory with 20 inch wheels.
Like Deep Sea Blue (have it on the 3), and Ivory looks nice (more cream than white), but carpets same colour which could look crap quick.
