Closer as in nearer to the right, rather than on the left side of the lane. You don't want to get into the nearest 12-18 inches as this is where all the loose grit gets

But you're wasting your time, the cyclist can do no wrong
To be fair he didn't really do anything 'wrong', just in the interests of self preservation in this sort of instance I would have been further to the right, but not in the non-existent gutter either wink
As a keen cyclist for years I'd not have considered myself safer by moving to the right. That would just make it easier for people to skim past with complete disregard. That looked to me like one of those nasty places where when you are cycling you rely on vehicle drivers to behave responsibly and watch what they are doing. It didnt happen.

So you think it's ok to baulk motorised traffic at 10mph on a 50mph slip road, then?

Riding nearer the verge would have helped in this case.

Something I have been trying to explain to the 'utterly entitled' brigade on here for days now!

Yeah because WVM was entitled to do 50mph through section of dual carriageway where two lanes blend into one with a junction across both carriageways directly after.

LOL at entitlement, read your own posts

Most of the 'entitlement' I see on the roads seems to be from drivers acting as though no other road users should be on 'their' roads. Cyclists ARE entitled to use the roads and use as much of 'their' half of the road as they like. Riding in the gutter is a sure fire way to get wiped out in short order.

The only way a cyclist can survive in this sthole of a country is to assume that every driver is either an incompetent ignorant cretin or an aggressive moron trying to kill them.

Errrrr it's a 50mph speed limit on that stretch of duel carriageway. As i and another poster said further up it's a stretch just after a speed camera on the Standbridge bypass. The right hand filter lane where this all happened has ample room for everyone.

Didnt someone earlier prove that he was actually going a lot slower than 50mph?

You know what, people like you need to get a sense of perspective. Travel to parts of the third world and see what a sthole is really like! The UK is not a sthole just because you are unable to deal with a few people who get a little close to you when you're out saving the planet on your push bike. Grow up FFS!

Yep, but not for everyone as one or two cyclist types like to 'dominate the road' and get all pissy when they get passed a little close becuase they are being an arse!

Oi- the country's ok it would work just fine if there were no people wink
As for surviving and watching out for other road users as idiots and out to kill you that's always been a useful mantra whatever mode youre using.
Besides, in most circumstances if you look around, you can soon work out who is the idiot. If you cant see one, keep quiet whistle

There was still room for the van driver to get past. When riding in a vulnerable place it's better to be in a "dominant" position in the centre of a lane where you are more visible and people have to think more carefully about how to get past you. Rather than brush past your elbow without a care.

"Dominating" the lane nearly got him knocked off

Exactly how would riding in the gutter would help in this case? The van driver didn't see the cyclist until it was almost to late, whether the cyclist was in the gutter or not, the van would still need to take avoiding action.

If anything, being out from the gutter would made the cyclist more visible.

No the cyclist would have been further away from the van
