I'd imagine he's being facetious.

Slightly different one this - I'm a photographer, I'm not getting booked for events anymore since they aren't happening.

How would I approach a main dealer to offer my services? Thinking of poisition myself as able to help them with fresh content for the social media channels. One shoot as a trial and if they're happy with the product we look at booking in more. Does Instagram even sell cars in your experience? Will I get further with phone or email? Who should I speak to?

The flaw in that plan is it’s not the service advisor that’s doing the identification of work required, it’s the technician (who in most dealerships are targeted on efficiency, rather than items reported).

It’s the service advisor’s job to sell it. The commission is a reward for how effective you are in selling the work-service managers can easily break down figures of the upsell rates advisors achieve on various items. Believe me in that there is a skill in effective and conscientious upsell, which deserves to be rewarded.

When I was a SM there was a big push on service plans, as they obviously encourage a customer to return to the dealership network for service work!
How can you sell someone a set of tyres or brake pads that may be worn on the car? Surely you just tell them that they are worn and need replacing?
In my experience, dealers will mention new tyres once you get to around 3.2mm. When I had a Ford company car, my local dealer had big displays about changing at 3.2mm rather than 1.6mm. Skoda were the same....until they realised it was a company car and the lease company wait until tyres, brakes etc are shagged.
I got an advisory on my MOT last year for rear tyres near the legal limit .. with over 3mm on them on the inside edge and over 4mm elsewhere

Plus a phone call telling me my tyres were nearly illegal.. mmm no

and

would I like them to replace them .. mmm no

Trouble is, so many people treat the 1.6mm legal minimum as a target. A bit of interesting reading...

To be fair, I always replace my tyres around the 3mm mark and I imagine I’m not alone on this although I find the main dealers are not really that competitive on pricing when it comes to tyres. (Well in my case anyway smile )

They have to factor in the tyres lasting until the next MOT or service, because most people wouldn't bother checking themselves.

Thank you, they were offering 3.5k against an £8k car so I guess there's a bit of wiggle room still as its in amazing condition smile

I'm sure a mokka should be a piece of cake to sell privately for loads more in good condition?

If it's clean, then run it through WBAC as a bargaining position, and be prepared to use them if they offer strongly on it. It's possible that your mate may need to wait a couple of weeks until WBAC do their standard email out a better offer thing they like doing.

I'm sure it would but he has seen the car he wants to buy at a branch of AC, and its more convenience than anything as its in Glasgow and he's 140 miles away, WBAC quoted £4780 so I guess it'd be £4.5k by the time he left there.

I get that, I’d told them what they were at before they serviced and Mot’d the car. The car was going back into the garage for the winter and that I had a set of CSL wheels with brand new tyres waiting to go on it

I just didn’t want it to stand all winter on brand new tyres

Still pissed me off though that I got a needless advisory

In my old S2000 grip dropped off noticeably while the tyres were still quite legal, and encouraged early replacement! biggrin

Hardly needless, if the tester believed they needed to be advised then that's what they would do. The tester does not and should not care what you think and probably wouldn't even know what you told reception. Its also at the lowest point on the tyre, usually on BMWs that's the middle or outer edges.

Got this on our type R it used to track on painted lines when tyres were half worn. It made you change them early it was so pronounced.
