Finally, a question. The (main) Dealer who’s been looking after the car to resolve the misfire didn’t charge me labour for the idrive screen going on the fritz (past water damage), but appeared while in the workshop. Obviously that’s very kind of them (and excellent customer service - i.e. you’re all reading about it here), but I feel somewhat guilty about the zero-cost fix.

Therefore, what sort of gratuity would be appropriate? Not sure how many people in the dealership have worked on it - I have good contacts in terms of the service advisors now, but no idea how many mechanics there are out back. Ideas please?
A good bottle of whisky means I have a friendly mechanic!
I'd say a couple of cases of Brewog (maybe 36/48?) would suit many tastes.

When my Rangie was in with The Man for open-heart surgery recently, on picking the beast up, I enquired which technician had done the bulk of the work on my car. Chap identified, I bought The Man's Man a case of Peroni for his trouble (apparently, pulling my car apart and putting it back together again was a right pig of a job).

With that in mind, I'd recommend you have a quick chat with the service staff at your dealer, and ask which of the technicians performed the gratis fix on your iDrive (it's likely to be one person). Find out what they drink, and hey presto, you know what to buy.

My The Man faithfully passes the SL each year despite it being utterly unacceptable when it comes to emissions and noise thanks that THAT exhaust.

The bottle of good whisky is for this. And for generally being treated as low priority and having to wait for months for anything at all to be done. But getting chased on the phone to pay the bill and pick up the car as soon as he has deemed he has enough time to work on it.

A case of Perroni or a palatable bottle of whisky is £30. You'll get more than 1/2hour of goodwill in the future.

After a few of my more recent..... questionable suggestions, I present my fellow Bargists this beauty!

Few cars in our thread can boast more heritage, luxury, refinement or barginess. Or potential for a bill to bend you over... but we'll gloss over that in traditional thread style.

Rolls Royce Silver Spirit

£4,000 - and it's not even pre-ruined!

Quite. When it comes to goodwill with my The Man, I'll bank as much of the stuff as I possibly can. laugh

Why is it that these cars always appear to be damp inside?

Probably because they only ever take it out for 10 miles at a time over winter, thus it never dries out inside.

Or like a lot of old cars, the seals have perished, and they leak.

Plus in that one's case, the heater is borked.

I think there’s also the fact that a significant subset of people don’t use climate/air-con.

Ever since my 1998 passat I’ve always set the temperature to 21, and the rest of it to auto. Only time I ever get condensation is after a protracted wet walk to the car, so clothing brings in the moisture.

So, so many people just don’t use it “as it affects the mpgees’, (or they’re all tight Northerners). I maintain that a car that uses it’s A/C full-time shouldn’t suffer damp.

[On another note - thanks for the feedback on gifts for the garage - actions have been taken, though I am yet to proffer the results up].

Is it just me, or does the digital display panel above the radio look utterly out of place in this Roller?

Could be just a fuse..

Damn this thread and it's pessimism! biglaugh Can't I even fantasize about driving a £4k Rolls and spending as much as a Fiesta for running costs (fuel bill excepted).

If you say Fiesta running costs (weekly) - you’re probably right! wink

It looks like a display that has been lifted straight off a 1980's Speak 'N Spell.

If I had a Rolls Royce, I'd want to test the "theory" (for theory, read: oft repeated trope) that the loudest noise in the car when cruising at 70mph is the ticking of the (analogue) clock. laugh

Unless it's one of these, no way on earth that's true.

I quite agree. The MPG saving is negligible and they're designed to be on all the time. Mine is always on auto (23C in winter as a southern softy as myself feels the cold, 20C in summer)
