totally wrong... The 928 GTS when designed was meant to be and it was the best GT car in the world. This entailed being super modern in feel, handling ergonomics etc by the standards of the early 1990s. These days it is hopeless compared to a boggo 640d, let alone something with more pedigree... The question is - so what?

A 959 is just the same. It may not see which way a 992.2 GTS goes, but a 959 is a 959 and I can guarantee you, it would feel 10x more involving than anything offered by Porsche in the last 25yrs, CGT excepted...

The 928 was fifteen years old when the GTS arrived - whatever it was, it wasn’t cutting edge.

959 vs 996TT - latter is probably setting the Porsche involvement bar limbo-low.

I find there's a lot of lazy journalism when comparing older cars with newer. Less refined is not the same as more engaging.

Not suggesting that's necessarily the case here, but it's a common confusion.

Depends what you're after - if it's feedback and interaction, then you're probably not left with too many choices among mainstream modern stuff.

The 928 GTS was 14yrs old when the GTS arrived indeed. Yet it was still consistently voted as the best GT in all tests from the period and perhaps due to being so ahead of its time when conceived, was still on the cutting edge compared to even the 850CSi or the SL600.

Anyway, my point that most cars that in their prime were considered cutting edge, aloof, and perhaps too good would feel like a go-cart these days when compared to even the most engaging of the current crop still stands. Hence the 959 in my opinion is no imminent danger of feeling boring or pointless to anyone of us on this thread should a set of keys accidentally fall into ones lap.

Agreed (but I know the GTO would be way more exciting in comparison).

997 Turbo will be faster, better, everywhere.
I (almost) remember reading in some iteration of the Flemke thread where he discussed his 959 (Sport?) and his then daily 993(?) Turbo as the more modern car being easily equal in everything bar the knowledge of what you were in or something along those lines.

When the 959 was new I thought they were incredible and would defend them against the F40 to any playground car buff I could find, when I wasn't trying to explain the Ruf CTR...

The 288 GTO is, after all, a pumped up homologation derivative of the 308
... and not the first pumped-up 308, “Millechiodi”:

I should think there are a few race and rally versions with some added flareage.

Well you're wrong... wink and while we are at it the F40 is just a road version of the 288 GTO Evoluzione

Yeah, but no. And it looks very different to the forebears and the less exotic models in the range the time.

I know Schumacher is very divisive, but I loved him and remember my joy when I found out he owned one. Also remember when they were languishing unloved, similar to the XJ220, for years to come... Until they didn't...

I put it before the jury that new cars are massively capable but not better for it. Much of the capability is wasted and they are virtually all, with few exceptions, dull as fk.

yes Objectively we have improvements beyond imagination of 25-30 years ago. Trouble is that convergence and competence means real choice has ebbed and certain aspects are being lost. It's not all terrible but it certainly isn't all great either. I'm a curmudgeonly old soul and refuse to drive anything less than about 16 years old if I can manage it, exceptions made for transporting stuff ("vanning it") / boring M-way schleps ("luxo-barging it") hehe

Different cars fulfill different roles.

I have a 2017 Touareg and a 2000 996.

The Touareg is not exactly fun to drive, but it's a much, much better car for covering big distances in than the Porsche. It's super quiet, super comfortable, and you can do 500 miles plus in it and get out feeling fresh. Although the 996 is probably decent for a car of its ilk, you'd never call it refined, and my back knows when I've done a couple of hundred miles in it.

On the other hand, a thrash in the Porsche is rewarding in a way the Touareg could never be.

I think mine was inherited by my baby brother... and my yellow (get me!) F40 frown

Still, have an R/C 1/12th scale 956 and a 962 to keep me warm at night biggrin

No one admitting to buying the 106 XSi? Would love to see a thread on that here... Or I could just finish mine and read my own thread!
