Couldn't agree more re VEL/Fuel tax

My Mini is £0.00 a year yet I do 30-35K a year in it

My MX5 sits in the garage for all but about 2k a year and costs me £240? ish

If you burn more fuel you could be paying more tax...simples

My Old V70 (1999) is also about £250 ish in Tax, yet returns 45-50 mpg..... it's a cheap fuel efficient car, the longer we keep it on the road, the less harm it's manufacturing process cost in CO2 ....

Think of the money the government would save in not running that pointless VEL dept as well, I get a reminder to tax my Mini....for £0.00, and failing to tax it for £0.00 could get me a fine WTF

I have ALWAYS thought this would be a much fairer system. I find it bizarre that I can have a 2010 Picanto which only costs £30 per year in tax even if I do 15k miles in it and pump out all the emissions doing 15k miles, but that the Clio I'm about to buy is £150 per year to tax even though I may well find myself doing 3k miles in it and producing considerably less emissions than my previous car!

It's just instantly a much fairer system if we cancelled the VED system and increased the fuel duty. Currently our duty is about 58p per litre. VED supposedly was forecast to raise ~£6.5b in 19/20.

We, in the UK, consumed a combined amount of ~47b litres of fuel (petrol and diesel) in 2019.

Dividing £6.5b by 47b litres of fuel works out to about 13p per litre. I'd have no problem paying 70p per litre of fuel in fuel duty, would mean the amount of tax I'm paying on emissions is proportionate to how much fuel my car actually uses. This would have a far more positive effect on encouraging people to buy more environmentally friendly cars if they do mega miles, but also wouldn't punitively punish those who have cars with high emissions that only do about 600 miles per year!

I suspect, however, that increasing fuel duty, even by 10-15p per litre would actually bring in MORE money than the current VED system does, as I don't do many miles per year but they're all urban so my consumption figures are terrible, and I suspect the same is true for most urban drivers who have very small, supposedly eco friendly cheap to tax cars that guzzle fuel almost as fast as a 3 litre V8 around town! Plus would also mean the DVLA can just shut down an entire sector of their operations, which frankly would streamline it much better than all the previous attempts, and save the government more money in bureaucracy costs.
Don't think it will happen, but I think that would be a fairer system. I know that road upkeep comes from general taxation but with your above example the amount of tax you pay would also feel more proportionate with the usage you are putting on the roads.

Exactly the same when I had my Leaf, an all electric car still have to "tax" it online for free

If it's on fuel it's almost impossible for people to evade and would save lots of money. With fuel prices relatively low right now would be time to make the switch.

it seems such an obvious thing to do, much fairer all round I wonder why the government do not take, what is the most sensible route to vehicle taxation.

Why do people continuously trot out the “put VED on fuel” thing like it’s going to happen? With the phasing out of ICE vehicles starting already why would you put loads of time and effort into a system overhaul with a limited lifespan?

Road pricing is far, far more likely and that’s pretty far fetched from the government that can’t give you coronavirus track and trace....

These are the criteria on another forum I use, which seem about right:

£1000 - £1999 = Luxury-Shedding.
£500 - £999 = Shedding.
£100 - £499 = Mega-Shedding.
Free - £99 = God-Like-Shedding.
This is a great guide I'd say.

Yesterday I spotted, went and viewed, and finally purchased a new shed for the folks. They were using my sheddy Mondeo the past few months and have been converted, so when I sold that last week I was given the task to find a new one. It falls in the standard "Shedding" category. I'll post some pics up later.

Hi all,

New to the forums (first post!) but been a lurker for a couple of weeks now.

Couldn't believe it when I saw this thread, it is exactly my thought process! Having driven sheds or hand-me-downs that I have run into the ground for years I finally took the plunge and bought an expensive car last year... What a mistake! Thought it was my dream car (2014 Passat alltrack, I don't dream very big I guess) and a keeper... Now I just want to get back to a shed that I don't have to worry about scratching on narrow lanes etc etc.

Anyway, just saying hi, enjoying reading about your shedding!
Welcome along!

I fully understand you, I have driving anything that's nice on a daily basis. If I've ever borrowed someone elses pride (or even just something worth more than a couple £k) I'm forever worrying about nipping a curb or catching a bumper. In a shed? Not a care in the world!

I finally got my new shed replacement for the dearly departed S Class. It's a facelift W163 ML270CDI, done 170k and it's loaded with kit. Think it has every extra except the sat nav, I paid a flat £1k for it from a local trader. Few little jobs I wanna do to it bit it's so far a great shed, only £600 to insure compared to the £900 for the S Class.

I'd love to have the guts to run a cheap ML... I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Pictures?

Hardly an S Class replacement but sounds promising - cheap MLs are quite plentiful at the moment it seems!

I think mine has cost around £150 in repairs so far (around two years). MAF, a track rod end and a thermostat

Wow! Both my CRV and Panda have cost £1k in their first years with me... To be fair, I'm a terror for doing unnecessary jobs on them.

I'm feeling like that: leased an Audi Q5 in March got rid of my 07 CRV (nowt was wrong with it).I like the Audi but I like the care free driving experience an older car brings.
I must have been sniffing glue that day.

For fun I put shed 1 into WBAC tonight and their offer is about 60 quid more than I paid about 3 years ago! Trouble is I don't want to sell it :-)

With my name added to the policy I am officially joining the God like Shed bracket.

The Corsa is mine for 6 months for a grand total of £0. Best part is, it’s just got an mot pass in the last couple of weeks and got a fairly decent amount of work done.

My list of fixes can be short and sweet.
Better headlight bulbs.
Replace pollen filter cover as it’s broken.
Maybe regas the air con.

Potential bill may be new tyres as the budget Davanti tyres. ( remember that thread? ) are wearing out very fast.
So replacement tyres may be on the cards but otherwise it’s fill with petrol and “enjoy”

You’ll have to sit down before reading on, I can’t be held responsible for any injuries sustained.

No. They are bloody awful things, horrible in the wet, really loud and generally are a ste tyre.
Even by budget wellies standards which usually are in the gutter. hehe

The gfs Polo has a set of Bridgestone A005s on, really good tyre and she’s very happy with them so I’ll fire a set of them on and be done with it.

Poorly shed news. The Shedaccord popped an injector today, smoke and chuffing like a steam train ensued.

Had a mobile mechanic I know round to have a quick look tonight and it's stripped the thread off the fixing bolt/head so will need rethreading etc. He's going to let me know tomorrow about cost etc so I'll have to decide what to do then. It also needs a new alternator (circa £200) and although the clutch has stopped slipping for the time being, I imagine it might need doing in the next 5,000 miles or so so not 100% sure what to do yet.

I do love the car though, so if I can get the injector fixed for £100-200 then I'll probably just get it all done and keep my fingers crossed!!

Still cheaper than a couple of months of the lease Octavia VRs we got rid of anyway!!

It's nice enough that I can enjoy running it, I prefer the S Class in every single way though

Oh my word. Who knew?

This is sensational stuff. You should start a thread on a popular motoring forum to spread the word
