Re: e39/e38 rust.
Living where I live (Sweden) means cold and long winters and salt on the roads to a simply idiotic extent so cars rust, alot. I've had 4 e38's, 2 nice rust free ones, both were very scaresly if at all driven during the cold months during their lives and not at all by me and it showed, no visible rust, maybe some was hiding but they were fine looking cars, the other 2, one 750 and the latest one my 728 are as rotten as old fruit on the body atleast, the 728 spectacularly failed its MOT today but looked immaculate if somewhat dirty underneith. All 7 of the e39's I've owned apart from the M5 have been more or less rusty, the earlier ones less than the later ones.
The M5 will stay, but there will be no cheap BMW barge to run as a daily from now on, legendary BMW ccv froze over the weekend, it was cold I admit but hardly Siberia, drove to work this morning in a cloud of oil smoke, blown rocker cover gasket, leaking like the Exxon Valdez. and leaving me stranded, unable to get to work... There will be a new'sih Toyota IQ or a VW Up or something similarly safe but utterly boring on my drive rather soon...
Whereabouts in Sweden are you? We just leased a Volvo XC60 for ridiculously cheap from Bilia. Also, on rust, Jesus Christ Sweden is bad for it! There's a guy on my street with a mk2 (I think) Golf estate and it looks like someone has shot it with a machine gun, it's riddled with holes in the boot and along the sills. A couple of points re Maison De Palmier - he's not taking as many photos as he used to and the house across the road, upon reflection, is a bit of an eyesore now it's finished.

On which note, the r230 SL500 arrives tomorrow. I’m already £444 down for a year’s insurance.
Bloody hell, that's steep. Just about the only thing worth getting old for is cheaper insurance; I don't think I pay more than that for 3 cars in total. Anyway, this isn't the car, but the spec is the same. "My" car has been standing at least six months, so it'll be interesting to see what state it is in (and whether it starts). It did have a small fortune dropped on it at the main dealer last summer, so fingers crossed. I'll post the obligatory petrol station shot.

Dreadful advert, but looks quite good. Pretty high on the spec sheet - Designo interior, COMAND, heated/cooled/memory dynamic seats, distronic.
Hi, may I ask as to how one goes about getting a spec sheet?Getting the vin is the hard part. I’m not in the motor trade... I believe traders can access vin numbers no problem? So I used to bung the Reg number into Merc or bmw mondial warranty websites and it’d throw up the vin no problem, but they’ve stopped revealing the vin while providing warranty quotes. Spoilsports.
Now I use blue-print dot com to get a vin from the Reg details - you need to register but once you’re in vin can be got from the registration plate... and then decode the vin and hey presto you have the full spec with all the option codes listed.
Someone will come along now with a far easier way of doing it.
Use cazana for full mot history with advisories listed, owner changes and plate changes... tinternet is very useful!
You can get really geeky and buy an old price list off eBay too - that’s how I know my CLS alcantara headlining cost the original owner a completely ridiculous £1180

I don't know. I doubt it. Put it this way, the central locking doesn't work...
I've been in touch with this guy in Kent who repairs R230 pumps but who is having a gander at SL2's R129 pump. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-R230-SL-PSE-Ce...
I don't think he does too much with the electronic side of things, so if it has suffered water damage than you're SOL but impeller failure or a replacement motor for burnt-out brushes is up his street. Diagnosis is free, just pay for the return postage...

Another Super 8, a little more expensive but 20k less miles. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C950582

I do find that silver makes this series XJ look like a bit X-type though!

This E500 has appeared before I believe somewhere near Liverpool.
That Designo leather and suede dash must have been horrendously expensive when new. It's getting closer to me!
$3999 car in my book.

If I can move my E430, I'd like to have a crack at the leather fetish E500.
Unless your Frau is putting her foot down, these decisions I'm getting the free r230 SL500 this week, and I am minded to turn that instantly rather than enjoy it for a while.
You should just swap it for some unused genuine Merc parts for W124/R129's

Guessing this'll end up near thread max but it's luvverley. Dark green metallic CLS with olive (??) leather, distronic, parktronic, rear blind, heated/cooled/massage seats, a proper engine... Somebody went wild with the spec when they were ordering it. Warning : advert is terrible. But it's done sensible miles and money's been spent. Never seen one this colour before - in the flesh and nicely polished I'd imagine it looks stunning.
