Car salesmen that don't sell...?

Sometimes you wonder why dealers pack them in if they're reluctant to move the cars around. I stopped off at Harrogate Horseless Carriages when looking for my first TVR on a Sunday just before they were about to close and asked for a test drive of the car next to the back of the showroom. I can still remember Nigel, the owner, looking at the time and the cars that he would have to move whilst I was thinking that I had really asked for too much given the circumstances. He moved the cars, I had a test drive and eventually bought the car.
And if was Nigel the owner I wouldn't have even looked at my watch , and you could have had as long as needed for your test drive regardless of the day.TA14 said:

If I had just walked in off the street then I could fully understand, but my visit was booked a day or so in advance with the specific request of a test drive. Again, I can't see me buying a car from this dealer ever, even if they were the last one available. One would've thought the ideal set up for a dealership is to have each customer greeted warmly, asked if they were specifically here for something and if not, given a chance to browse then checked in with later?
Not sure why some people seem to be so upset by the idea of that. What's with the violent soiling of nappies over people expecting to be communicated with by salespeople whose job is to do exactly that?

This is exactly what I posted earlier that happens at the BMW Audi and Merc dealerships near me, you are greeted and asked by the reception girls what help you need but you won't talk to a salesman unless you ask for one!Not sure why some people seem to be so upset by the idea of that. What's with the violent soiling of nappies over people expecting to be communicated with by salespeople whose job is to do exactly that?

Its not sales peoples job to do exactly that. People could be in for one of many reasons not relating to sales, and nor would people want jumped on by a salesman when they enter the showroom? Not sure why some people seem to be so upset by the idea of that. What's with the violent soiling of nappies over people expecting to be communicated with by salespeople whose job is to do exactly that?
And likewise its not people "soiling their nappies" over people expecting to be communicated with, its those people who seem to flounce out without being capable of expressing what they want. Its not difficult.
The Merc dealers we use, and previously the BMW dealers have dedicated meet and greet / reception type staff for that, not sales people.
The VW dealers is a bit more hap hazard. You can get in and around the showroom without going near any sort of reception desk. I dont think they would come near you immediately either. Having said that when i was for buying from there i rang in advance and arranged an appointment with the sales guy. Subsequently i've been in looking the service desk people and never got approached by anyone on the way, although i tend to be in for a purpose so know where i'm going.

Yep, that's exactly what happens at the BMW dealer I use.The reception staff ask what you've come in for. If you say 'just looking' they'll happily leave you to crack on and the sales staff don't bother you. If you say you're interested in xyz model, they'll get someone to help you, even if you're just wanting a brochure or something. If there's no one available they'll find you a seat and a drink etc, then get someone for you asap.
I'm not at all surprised the sales people leave me alone when I'm looking at the cars becauseif I was looking to buy, or would like a test drive, I'd have told the reception staff.

You would be surprised, my lease deal is up soon so I thought I'd look round several of the garages in town, visited BMW, Volvo and VW and was roundly ignored by them all, none more so than in VW where I was sat in a Tiguan right beside the reception desk.
If asked it would've been a 'just browsing today' but very strange to have very little interaction.
I've just ordered a Cupra from the SEAT dealer where the very young salesman could not of been any more helpful.
Is there even a point to this post ? You got ignored and even if they had asked you were just browsing ?? seems like ignoring you they saved themselves a few seconds of life they wouldn't get back, they haven't lost business, they saved you a few seconds of life not having to tell them you were browsing - nobody's time wasted by ignoring you. Looking into the future of you felt you were no longer interested in Tiguan due to this - were you ever really interested in the first place ?If asked it would've been a 'just browsing today' but very strange to have very little interaction.

A smile and hello is really all it takes sometimes.

It isnt though so i dont know why you're jumping on that bandwagon - you said that you are greeted by a reception "girl"(?) whereas HumanDoing said he expects sales people to do it.
