^ Gentlemen, I can see this debate about indicating and changing gear is of great importance to you both, with the constant back and forth that's been going on for the past 2 days. Could you perhaps take it off to the 'advanced driving' forum or some other place where you can both continue bickering with each other to your heart's content and let this one get back to shedding please. Thanks. smile

When in a hole, stop digging.
FFS Phil, you're being obstinate for no reason here. If you plan well enough you don't need to use the indicator and change gear at the same time. It is as simple as that.

The answer to number 2 is obviously don't pull out if you can't do it safely, but what that has to do with your initial scenario - or indicating and changing gear at the same time - is beyond me.

If you can find any documentation from any motoring organisation which states that it's desirable or necessary to change gear at the same time as indicating, I'd love to read it.

Sorry, Lemming, you're quite right and I composed my post above before you posted and submitted it after yours. I've made my point, Phil has made his, so I'm happy to leave it at that.

The clio was my daily for 4 years and offset the Noble cost £30 road tax 65mpg and on my dailly commute of 40 miles A road it was all i needed. Amazing how fast you can drive a road when you drive it 300 times a year. It was such a trooper it took 3 of us and all the kit skiing. Pulled an audi q7 (on summers) out of a ski slope car park.
Think i ran it to 145k but it started leaking and having electrical starting issues so had to go.
Leaks? Oil, coolant or into the car itself?

I am considering one of these next. I like the compactness, the £30 a year road tax and the rust resistance.

I know someone that ran a petrol one to over 100K from new that was replaced due to niggling issues.
Every Clio has a leaky sunroof
Even the ones without a sunroof. wink

Update on the sheds (above post 6 months ago)
Audi needed a track rod end for the MOT and I had the aircon re-gassed as worked but rather averagely, now ice cold.
Just done a faultless trip to France, and another week away in UK,1200 miles in August alone, all with roof load and bikes on the back. I didn't get European breakdown cover as I just knew I wouldn't need it. It chugs on.......

The Saab also is fine and the only thing I have done to it in 2019 is fix a dodgy headlamp relay with a soldering iron.

Shame as I really want an EV......
Just saw this. Did a double-take. Wondered why a picture of my car had a roof rack and bike carrier. Same bum-down stance, same green and same wheels.

Having run "sheds" since 2013, and with the last one dying three weeks ago (MOT fail big time), this is appropriate to include the latest shed.

Looking for an early MINI Cooper, I found a couple for sale locally. The first sold an hour before my phone call, but I had a 'Plan B' : another for sale in Market Drayton about half an hour up the road; a p/x to clear. So off we went to have a look.

As we pulled on to the forecourt, said MINI was being inspected by another couple. So we hung around until the salesman was available, upon which we were told that it was now sold. Disappointed, we wandered around the rest of the stock, not expecting to see anything as the dealer in question sold cars mainly in the £15k to £50k region.

Anyway.

At the far end was a E46 BMW 3-Series Compact. Metallic blue, no rust anywhere on the bodywork. immaculate interior. For £600!! Apparently, a local lady had bought it for £995 a week earlier, then had it inspected by a friend who worked for a BMW dealer. He was of the opinion that the work needed to get through the next MOT was more than the car was worth, so said lady brought the car back to the dealer and said, 'fk it off'.

Dealer, worried by the news of the work required, drops the price to £600...............No service history. and 2 weeks MOT left................

Test drive. Engine sound good. Pulls well. Brakes strong in a straight line. No clonks or odd noises from the suspension. All electronics work. We convince the dealer to have an extended test drive half an hour to the little garage around the corner from us, for a poke around. All we want is "It's a pup" or "Tidy enough".

We get a "Tidy"

Bought for £600, spent £208 yesterday for two new rear tyres, an oil and filter change, a brake fluid flush, and a brake sensor. MOT pass!

Happy days

eh no leaks were from the sunroof seal and the ariel which had some electronics above the interior mirror so they started causing issues. Brakes and springs really cost nothing the car just ran and ran that 1.5 dci renault engine really was a peach. Even the bodywork of the car was in decent nick no rust I can think of.

In all honesty I had a bit more disposable income for a better daily and wanted something that was comfier and really looked the part so replaced with teh pug 406 coupe. Probably the best looking "everyday car" I had ever owned.
Thanks. The Clio a friend had had leaks around the sunroof. The 406 Coupe is a stunner.

£1,000 got me a 70,000 mile 88bhp 2002 52 plate Mazda 2500 4x4 pick up 9 months ago. A further £200 on a box for the pick up bed as its main use is as a Tank Transporter (Tank being my 11.5 stone dog). Some rummaging around found me some wood for a false floor and a scaffolding board to make a dog ramp, stored under the floor.

Other than £30 for a mobile auto electrician to replace and fit a rear fog light that went missing some how (laziness on my behalf), its about the best grand I've spent (he says with MOT booked tomorrow morning). Clean and tidy inside with A/C, a heater that works and electric pack, exterior is ok and it seems to be running fine. Also, a bit of fun in the snow as 4x4 high and low for when I need to get work and 2x4 high for when I don't.

Massively under powered but cruises happily at 70 and happy to park it anywhere with no worries...unlike my Defender.

Really crossing my fingers for tomorrows MOT

320d for £400 ?! That's brave and you've got much bigger balls than I ! Keep up updated! smile

Actually have an issue. The turbo seems to come in at over 3k rpm consistently. Diagnostic points to the turbo actuator. Not sure if I should start by replacing that £160 or a whole turbo with actuator for £260. Or just leave as is and keep driving 😁

I just finished running a £1300 4.4 L322 Vogue. 150k, VANOS done, gearbox done and the front diff done. Interior was spotless. It was up at £2500, but I managed to swap my £1300 S320 for it, a car which was easily the best way to do shed motoring. 53mpg on the motorway, uber reliable and comfortable. I'd been using it for constant country driving, 4k in a month. At 200k, everything that needed replacing had been replaced. I can't rate it high enough. Both of them gave me trouble free motoring for a lot of miles. Only got rid of the S Class because that deal was too good to pass up, and only got rid of the Range Rover because 8mpg was too little for the returned performance. I've got a £300 Volvo V70 now that's pretty much immaculate.

So ... what's the shedding approach to general rust? Rear wheel arches and general places where rust start to appear.

Just leave it, just gaffa tape it, or is it okay to try and attempt to delay/mask it?

Paint with something (hamerite?) and fill with filler or is that doing it wrong?

My MK1 Focus Estate TDCi shed update is looking expensive. Something isn't right as I'm only getting 40mpg when I was getting 55 before. I now do 30 miles a day commuting so its getting expensive. Possibly the fuel filter, but it's smoking a hell of a lot on full throttle so I'm wary of the turbo might be going.

It now needs wheel bearings looking at, at around 100 each supplied and fitted. What do we reckon, leave it or pay to get it done?

My new shed has almost zero. Toyota were making cars out of granite by the look of it in the early 2000s. Shed 1 has a spot on a wheel arch which I just ignore totally. Shed 2 has none. They'll be here long after me at this rate.

Sell it and go petrol Shed! Do you do enough mileage to justify a diesel is my question? Lots to go wrong with em, that's the only issue.
Essential maintenance can/must include wheel bearings tho if you keep it!

I do around 1k a month at the moment, so it's on the verge of being worthwhile having a diesel. I keep toying with getting something petrol and N/A. Plenty of revvy fun and very easy to work on. My MG ZR was perfect like that

Regarding the smoking, it might be a split in the turbo hose causing it.
