Jeep invented the niche long before LR copied it in 1948.

The Land-Rover was the first civilian utility 4x4 designed for the task. Jeep started as a military field car and was adapted for civilian work when the end of the war was in sight.

Just a quick reminder (although I know that you do already know this) the 3.5 tonne towing limit is a legal limit based on the use of overrun brakes on the trailer.
Anything heavier than this will require brakes on the trailer that work from their own system (such as air brakes etc) and this becomes quite a specialist installation for a road car.
Incidentally that sort of setup is standard fit on a lot of yank pickups and trailers but weight limits on your license then become the limiting factor unless you have a Class 1 or C1+E license

Useful excuse for not being able to tow the mother in lawnout to Sunday lunch.

True but back then Land Rover looked heavily to America. Not just in looking at the Jeeps conversion to civvie use and realising there was a potential market to service the colonies and regions but the idea of the Range Rover was born from seeing the Suburban which had added car like comfort and was selling to families. Even the Rostyle wheels are a licensed copy of the AR500.

We took lots of ideas from all over and melded them with our ideas and made them work better for us. We do it with language and design and everything around us. It’s arguably what makes us the only island nation on the planet that looks outwards and openly out of choice.

Plus the engine...

Going back to the new Defender - I know this is only an imaginative rendering based on the spy shots, but I like this...

Dislike the gaping big 'sporty' vents on the front and the lack of any shape to the bonnet. The bonnet has to have a step in it.

Didn't manage to grab a pic unfortunately, but have seen one in 'urban cammo' type paint going around Wolverhampton the last few days with what I presume is a big radar thing on the roof, so perhaps are doing some testing of some sort...

Rumours abound that JLR are to be sold to PSA (Peugeot). I am sure that Brexst moaners will no doubt blame the EU.

The UK government should never have sold their golden shares.

Oh dear, if that is true I really feel for the JLR employees, I think the Vauxhall guys are living each day as it comes aren't they?

The French have no interest in building stuff in an isolated Island on the edge of Europe. Macron will see to that.

I could make out if it was JLR on the table or just the J. Splitting the two companies has been on the table for some time and Tata doesn’t really want the J.
