The responses to this thread amaze me; don't think I've ever seen so many bigots in one place.
On which side?
Well I'd love to know how you could class someone a bigot for flying a flag representing their country during a sports event it was taking part in.
Did I say that was the reason? Whilst I agree that some of the posters in the anti-flag camp do display a level of zealousness that could be described as bigoted, the pro-flaggers have their share of fundamentalist loons too.
Could be described as bigoted... hehe (What else could it be described as?)

fwiw, I don't have a flag on my car, but I have no issue whatsoever with those who wish to adorn their vehicles with them. What irks me is the underlying middle-class snobbishness of those who don't see the point of the flags. If you don't like them / see the point of them, then thats entirely your perogative. I just find it a bit lazy to suggest that flags=chav.

Im not going to waste my valuable life on trawling through 26 pages on a can opening of worms excercise.

I am 38 yrs old , born in Crawley , lived in Finchley , Terling and Salfords .

Moved to Scotland in 1981 .

So been up here a while , im English through and through but coming from a Scottish region im certainly not missing those bloody flags.

Whats wrong with using the Union jack , werent we all meant to be united?

And for the ignorants , ive never had a deep fried Mars bar , nor do i know any one who has .

Its a tourist student thing.

You must admit, though, that there is a strong correlation between the two. Yes, there are exceptions but wander (or drive if you feel safer) round any council estate and then compare it to any "better" neighbourhood and report back here which has the greatest number of houses/cars smothered in red and white cloth/plastic.

ETA: Anyway, my objection is not the flags themselves but the notion that there is a link between them and patriotism and the suggestion, by some, that not having them means you are unpatriotic. The flags are nothing whatsoever to do with being patriotic but are a nationalistic display of support for a football team; that is all.

I wouldn't put them on my car for the simple fact that they wouldn't stay on for long. I have seen them blowing all over the place at low speeds on the motorway and feel that they are hazzard.

Its a shame that the general consensus is that they are chavvy but I can definately understand why. That said I did see an old couple sporting one on their little Polo this morning on the way to work and thought that it was good to see.

Nothing wrong in supporting your country. Just a shame that it takes a football tournament to bring them out. I love the way they fly the flagh everywhere in the states.

Those who say they hate it would gain far more kudos if they came out with 'Not going to watch the football, I was crap at it and have no interest as a result'.
So you are saying only people that are good a football watch it rofl
So all those fat, beer swilling, football fans are actually Pele in disguise

I may be the best fisherman in the world (I don't actually fish) but I would not watch a fishing program.

I noticed at the newstand that one of the papers is giving away free vuvuzelas.

The Daily Star.

England flags hanging out the side of the transit, with a copy of the daily sport proudly displayed on the dashboard next to a 6 month old pork pie, while you head off to do a cash in hand job with Dazzer and Bazzer. Spot on.

Can't see the problem. Get in there if you support your team.

If that were true, then it would most likely be because the average working class bloke couldn't give a toss about being who he is, or trying his hardest to distance himself from those who he see's as beneath him on Society's slipper ladder.

That's been the problem with the working/middle classes in this country for the past couple of hundred years or so. Class, and the perception of it.

I am off out to buy an England flag for my car.

If it annoys as many people in the real world as it does on this thread it is more than worth buying.

Nope, missed by a mile.

I suggest those that bh most were those ste at it who never got over it.

A subtle but important difference.

(I was crap at football, I enjoyed it though, just feet are too damn big and I don't turn easily - I was better employed as a flank forward (Emile take note!) - I am neither fat, nor beer swilling or Pele in even the best disguise wink)

Mainly those on the anti-flag side; it's quite pathetic.
I think Mr Brown was infering that somehow anyone displaying their national flag is a bigotted racist.

You appear to have a problem with English comprehension - and language too by the looks of it: the word you were looking for is 'imply', not 'infer'. Look it up.

Edit to remove unnecessary quotes.

what a load of crap this thread is, why is it people are ashamed of this country? yes i know some pond life use the flag in all the wrong ways and that pisses me off. the thing is after over 10 years in the forces i am proud of our flag, ive seen lots of good strong loyal men die for it. why do some people think they are to good or they are above everyone else, get a grip on life and just get on with everyone.
my 3 year old gave me a flag for my car this morning, but due to me driving on the motorway alot i told her i couldnt put it on, the look on her face could of made the biggest man bubble up, so do you want to call me a chav for loving our flag? i say try and say it to my face.

tattoo101 I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here. From reading most of these posts, whatever the opinion of the poster on whether flying the flags is chavvy or not, 99% of people on here respect the St Georges flag, the armed forces and what the flag represents.

The dispute is whether by buying cheap plastic flags because the World Cup is on patriotic or just jumping on the bandwagon.

Nice attitude. Not really helping with the assumption that only knuckle draggers display plastic flags from their car windows...

By the way, those servicemen died for the Union Flag. Not the St George's cross.

That's 'cos you're brown. The racialists were throwing them at your head.
