Sounds like a Lexus might be up-your-street?
Had two 400s from 1995 to 2003, and did 150000 miles in them. Great cars, thoroughly enjoyed them, though did have some quite major repair bills. They unfortunately don't come in diesel.....and I still do 25,000 a year on businessHow about a sporty conservatory for £3400? top of steering wheel looks excessively worn, but rest doesn't look too bad from what you can see in the photos. Ok, not the most exciting engine, but for all you E39 lovers....

Miles too expensive. £2.5k if you're lucky.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-BMW-520-I-SPORT-TOU...
at the other end of the spectrum, who in the right mind would spend £3995 on a E320 cdi with 344,000 miles on it!!!

Amazing thing about the A8? It's actually quieter than the petrol 400s I had.

On your last pic, of the roof and mirror, mine has buttons marked 1, 2 and 3. Apparently you point the remote control for your electric gates, garage door etc at the front of the car once, the car learns the transmitted signal, and the button then works in place of the remote. Not that I have electric gates or any kind of garage! what will they think of next? Vibrating seats to keep the wife happy on a long journey?
Mercedes already have the vibrating 'massage' seats! As for the electronic gate/garage control, as you mention mine doesn't have it. It seems to be one of the rarest options (along with the ski hatch, which mine has and I'll probably never use). That is some seriously cool technology though. The sort of thing that really intrigued me when I got the A8. It just feels like an engineering tour de force. Every little bit is as over-engineered as you would expect from say, a classic Mercedes! I'm a bit saddened to say that 'modern' Audis do nothing for me and I think a lot of them are more style than substance. But I'm glad I did get the A8 as it gives me a view of what Audi used to be about.
I've never used the tilting sunroof, though it was demonstrated to me when I bought the car. Similarly, you can choose how much of the sunroof you want open by how far round you twist the dial. I always just have it fully open if I'm having it open. I love having a sunroof.
This looks quite a lovely place to sit - 1 owner, 55k S320 for £4495? the leather looks in particulary good condition

Wasn't aware there was ever a 520i Sport, thought it started at 525i in E39, with the 520i as an ES runout edition?
Fox!
520i Sport appeared in 2002 and was available both as a 520i Sport Saloon and Touring and a 520i Sport Saloon Avus Blue Edition. Most of the Avus Blue cars were Spanish with Alcantara/cloth. There was also a 525d with the same trim availability.Fox!

I fear for your welfare when your gearbox explodes. You should leave instructions at home for the removal of all belts, knives and poisons. It's going to be a rough, rough time.As for the electronic gate/garage control, as you mention mine doesn't have it. These A8's....
I take it the suspension and quattro gets funny about towing things like the RS6?
Saying that this S8 has a tow bar...

I guess I am in for major borkage with these

Certainly the earlier A8/S8's can be used to tow. They are AWD but traditional spring suspension so nothing to worry about. Not sure about later generation cars. I take it the suspension and quattro gets funny about towing things like the RS6?

As I've mentioned before, if the gearbox goes I may stump up the £1500 to get a replacement in. If I feel I've had a good bit of use from the car I may just break it. If it goes, that is. It feels very strong and has been well serviced. The thought of it breaking does not weigh on my mind. As it is, I'm just enjoying the car, it's great.

It is quattro, and there is a shiny, unused detachable tow bar in the boot. I don't intend to tow, as we have an XC90 and a Merc ML for that (no, we are not mad, there are four of us, two generations of the same family, with 4 cars between us. The newest car is a 54 reg). It has the wonderful air suspension, so I will take your warning and read the handbook before towing incase I need to use a particular setting for towing if I ever do. The air suspension makes even our subsided fen roads feel smooth.
I don't intend to tow an RS6.....

Hopefully going to see this tomorrow:

Any advice on what to look for, common faults of this age etc. Have done a load of research already just incase I've missed anything! Seems a cracking colour combo, described history seems good. And looks ace in pictures. With long T&T if I can knock a few hundred quid off the asking price, run it until the bork kicks in. Sell valuable bits and scrap. Can't go too wrong?
Cheers, EM
