Ask a car salesman anything...anything at all.

Just after a bit of guidance please, I appreciate from following this thread that this question may be a bit 'how long is a piece of string'.
We are looking to purchase an MPV from a main dealer, a few years old and been on sale for approx 1 month. These don't seem to be selling but holding onto value.
We have a car to part exchange. On Auto trader these are priced at £5700-£6500 for comparable year, mileage and model. Ours will need a machine polish, a repair to bumper edge where a scrape is and a general good valet. It has 1.5-2 year transferrable OEM warranty remaining. It also has a fsh.
WBAC suggests £4885 for I assume perfect condition. I was hoping for a average CAP condition over poor but the Ford consumer CAP tool isn't working so I can't check what those values are.
I appreciate that some money may be taken off the sale car but in roughly what area should we be looking at for a P/X value or is it simply aim for £4885 and £4300-4500 would be a great deal as that only leaves a little profit for the dealer? Or are we likely to be offered less? I would like a figure in mind before we test drive the MPV and sit down with the dealer as I'm rubbish at negotiation and would like to state realistically what I'd like.
Thanks in advance.
Deal will be done this month if that makes any difference, I understand it could be a slow month for sales.
If CAP clean is £4800, then start deducting for recon off that.We are looking to purchase an MPV from a main dealer, a few years old and been on sale for approx 1 month. These don't seem to be selling but holding onto value.

Bumper paint £250
Valet £75
Service due or imminent? £250
Air Con working nice and cold? If not £100...for regas only, not a failed compressor or whatever else.
Windscreen Chip? £50.
MOT? £150 including a contingency fund for possible failure
Any other bits broken or missing? ..........-£
That then should give you a figure to expect
So you'd want to give him £3900 for a car potentially worth £6500 ?
Most used cars are not exactly perfect.
I understand that you may need to spend some money to prepare the car but surely this is factored in to the PX price v retail anyway.
PS you forgot to add tyres (add a set of dealer ditchfinders of your choice), new wiper blades and a new set of mats (£3 from Home Bargains).

Here's what CAP say "CAP Clean" means. Handy to know to stop having your pants pulled down at Part Ex time.
Note that the definition of "clean" depends on vehicle age.

I doubt it does as the OP states, but that is the calculation he should be using if he wants to guestimate it's worth.
In your example if a dealer gave £4800 for it with a view to retail it at £6500, an £1800 margin minus £360 VAT is under £1500.
Minus all the above work and labour, £1000 or so leaves £500 and then put a warranty on it, say a couple of hundred quid and we are down to £300 margin before anyone has purchased it or had a chip on the price.
Hardly worth doing for under £300 profit....not worth turning the lights on for...

Cheers, that is very useful. Possibly CAP average based on that, although the alloys have some crazing on them that could mean refurb and therefore below average.Note that the definition of "clean" depends on vehicle age.

...Cheapest on Autotrader is listed at £4995 but the photo has £5995 in the screen...
Had something similar when I bought my Toyota Auris: screen price was £1000 higher than the Autotrader price. I queried this with the salesman who explained that the screen price would include all the prep normally associated with a used car sale at a franchised dealer, like refurbishing the scuffed alloys, touching up stone chips etc.The lower price was more of a 'sold as seen' offer, albeit with the usual Toyota 12 month used warranty thrown in.
Aside from some initial confusion, its quite a smart approach in that it simultaneously caters for different buyers. Being tight I opted for the cheaper option!

More likely they’ve had it in stock for 90 days, changed the price on the web but not reprinted the stickerThe lower price was more of a 'sold as seen' offer, albeit with the usual Toyota 12 month used warranty thrown in.

Drives me mad too, its the "cash buyers" that infuriate me the most; they are looking for an XYZ in so and so colour, you ask their budget and they just come back with, "it depends on the deal" or "depends on the car", you show them a car in their chosen colour and "oh it's above my budget", right well give me a clue please!!
Thing is for some of us it really does - if I visit or telephone a dealership it is because they have for sale exactly the model I am after. My budget is not relevant and varies on the car - I won't pay for a 2 year old car what I would for a 1 year old, for example. So it really does depend entirely on the car or the deal. I appreciate this isn't helpful and perhaps its more frustrating if the buyer isn't very specific.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
