An E39 B10 cruised by me on the M6 the other day. Gave me a brief wibble.

Really quite fancy one of these, as an antonym to the modern bloated, over-powered, can't-really-enjoy-on-our-roads, too much tech, heavy, etc, stuff on our roads these days. Would probably be good fun driving

I see your point but would rather spend the same amount on a refurbed Clio 182, mx-5 etc if I wanted light, basic fun at sane speeds.

I bet that's closer to the original Golf GTI in weight, size and performance than a new Golf GTI is to the original.

ETA: If the chassis is sorted, I reckon that'd be a hoot to hoon about the country lanes.

Isn't it an example of "the modern bloated, over-powered, can't-really-enjoy-on-our-roads, too much tech, heavy, etc, stuff on our roads these days"?

I went to get one of my cars aligned today. A few interesting cars turned up including a lupo gti. That really is a small car. Maybe not the best super mini but surely worth a go.

Preferable in almost every way.

Quicker, lighter, rawer and 11 grand cheaper.

yes

I like the idea of the Up! GTi but I expect the reality to be underwhelming (if still eminently usable). I guess it depends on ones expectations and I'll be first to admit that mine are not entirely realistic! A Suzuki Swift Sport is probably closer to what I'd look for in a peppy, fun super mini (revvy nasp engine, snickety spanish 'box and direct steering all wrapped up with some hard-to-quantify-but-driver-pleasing "attitude" to the way it goes over bumps and around the curves, if not a surfeit of stomp). Maybe a headache on the m-way but then worth taking the greener route for. Old Twingo 133 or clio 182. 197 / 200 cup might be a good middle ground if heavier.

You think?? So you are saying it is bloated, over-powered, etc? Really? Compared to most cars being sold today, I don't think it is, but hey, we'll beg to differ smile

I can't see a reason why I'd walk by a Lupo to buy one.

Yeah, but that's 18 or so years old, and not many about. I'm talking about new cars you can buy today. Most are bloated, heavy, too powerful for our roads. I just don't think manufacturers make many cars like the Up! GTI anymore. Whether that's a good thing or bad thing is all a matter of opinion.

Moose's post on the GT3 story on the front page does make you wonder about how amazing this Up GTI could be, though, if it was a case of VW wanting to make the best engaging hatch they wanted to, and using modern tech to make that happen, rather than start with an over-sanitised car and try to add back some engagement.

A compact, sub-1-ton 115hp Up, but if it was:
- 115hp 1.3 NA with 7500rpm redline
- brakes with decent feel and needing more than a toe for heavy retardation
- hydraulic power steering
- no clutch delay valve nonsense
- a DBW throttle that replicates a cable throttle, rather than it being programmed to smooth out st driving.

One could think of loads of other salivating examples of 'simple' engaging cars from the likes of BMW, Porsche, Ferrari/Alfa/Maserati, Jaguar, Peugeot, Renault, Honda, Toyota, Mazda...

You hadn't stipulated the new part. I've never been one for setting fire to £20 notes so I wouldn't buy a new car anyway so it's a moot point for me.

Given the £13k + required to acquire said Up! I cannot imagine a scenario where it makes the list of places I'd put that cash.

Nice choices as usual Loon yes

I'll take the SLK55 right now. Carbon roof to follow.

Lovely looking thing, I had one as my wedding car, a nice change from the default Rolls/Bentley. Shame the marriage didn’t last as long as the car has!😂
