I'm still of the opinion that a sporty looking car that is tuned beyond expectation can be a sleeper.
Then you are wrong.

Your friend's corsas was a sleeper but cosmetic mods are the anthesis of being a sleeper.

lads all this sleeper talk, is made me want one i always fancied the idea of smoking others at the lights ideally in a total shed but something i could use everyday, anyone here know of forums where i can make such a purchase ?

cheers
Ebay. Took seconds.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291926771241

NB I think the alloys spoil it but being a white connect van recovers. I'd want steels for 100% sleeper effect.

Rear tyres are a little chunky, but I'd forgive it for that

ETA that Connect on steel wheels would be awesome!

Thank you Wikipedia. It's as I thought. A Golf GTI with double or triple the power is definitely a sleeper imo.
Not a chance. A GTI is supposed to be quick. How quicker than a standard GTI is immaterial.

A Rover 420GSi turbo looks like a taxi cab but would run M3's quite happily. Well until it ate another drive shaft (this may well be personal experience here). That is a Q car.

However in the next breath I would also say a V10 Phaeton is not a Q car. Yes, it was faster than hot hatches. No visible exhaust. Looks like a fat Passat. But it is a big executive car, and they can be fast. So there would be no element of surprise.

And that is the crux of the question. Surprise.
Q ships came from the second world war. They were supposed to look like crappy tramp steamers, and were designed to draw the fire of german submarines. The germans would torpedo the boat, and a decoy crew would 'abandon ship'. The sub would surface to finish off the ship with shell fire (cheaper than torpedoes). The coverings of the guns would get dropped and the submarine would have a fatal surprise.

So it is the same with Q cars. That superb Focus a few pages back. No-one would think that what looks like a dirty diesel shopping trolley would have such fire power.

A GTI - no one would be surprised how fast it is. That's what it is supposed to be.
A Golf GTI is supposed to be as quick as an M3 is it?

I'm pretty sure an M3 driver would be VERY surprised by not being able to get past a standard looking Golf GTI. And a Golf GTI could be dumbed down to look like a base model in less than an hour with steel wheels and a plain front grille.

Some of the opinions on this are just way too B&W. It's open to interpretation. If I bought a Gallardo and couldn't get past a Golf GTI, I would be surprised....and annoyed. I believe that to be a sleeper, or maybe a half awaker for the pedants.

That Rover? ^^^^^ with the engine from the MG SVR - is a Sleeper.

oh. wait.

You thought it said Slipper ?
On the contrary, I would suggest it is you who is overcomplicating it.

From Wikipedia:

"A sleeper (US English) or Q-car (British English) is a car that has high performance and an unassuming exterior.[1][2][3] Sleeper cars are so called because their exterior looks little or no different from a standard or economy-class car. In some cases the car appears worse due to seeming neglect on the owner's part, typically referred to as "all go and no show". While appearing to be a standard or neglected car, internally they are modified to perform at higher performance levels. The American nomenclature comes from the term sleeper agent, while the British term derives from the Q-ships used by the Royal Navy."

I don't see how a 620Ti running 250 bhp doesn't qualify.
Thank you Wikipedia. It's as I thought. A Golf GTI with double or triple the power is definitely a sleeper imo.
So a GTi with performance exterior enhancements is considered "unassuming"?
What performance exterior enhancements? Some wheels and a badge? It's funny how normally everyone bangs on about performance German cars being too dull and subtle looking, and yet twist it around to suit a different argument, such as this one.

Yes, but to my mind too unusual, it stands out, definitely a sleeper but I as a petrolhead know old Beetle get fiddled with, get 911 or Subaru engines fitted etc, most aren't fast but I only see the odd one so I would be wondering, did get hammered by a shortened beetle once in Mk1 Golf, owned by a Volkswagen specialist, it was very quick.

A battered old Beetle in 1978 wouldn't warrant a second glance but nowadays, they are usually pristine so this would look a bit like a set up.

Needs to be a fairly numerous model still, like all those corsage with a VXR engine, preferably in five door form with an air of shed.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

A Golf GTI already has a moniker, it's called a hot hatch. Sure one with a bit more power would be surprising but the clue is in the title.

Maybe to another petrolhead as they may expect a 350Z to be quick, but not 430 bhp quick, the public just see a sports car which equals fast, also, I guess a lot on here would hear the charger ?

I hope it's a positive displacement charger or a it's not supercharged in my eyes! Different argument all together or rather to be more succinct, the sttest, supercharging' way...

No checked plate, tinted windows, race seats, quilted leather or carpets but stinks of wet dog.

It does have a 520BHP LS3 fitted though

I refer the honourable gentleman to the second and third sentences... 'A GTI is supposed to be quick. How quicker than a standard GTI is immaterial.' biggrin

The rest of your argument I agree with (despite upgrading an M3 to a Gallardo in the middle). But does that make you car a sleeper? No. If it was a 'match' on steel wheels, cloth interior and a pea-shooter exhaust. The definitely yes. All IMHO, naturally. wink

I'm just glad someone has finally suggest their own car (I assume) which isn't actually a sporty car with some modifications or a German barge with a big engine.

I would have suggested my old Montrose, except that when you start it people run for cover, children cry etc.

That Defender is a beast - I love it!

This is my sleeper that I've had for a few months. Surprises a few people who think it's just an old Subaru with body kit bolted on. Remove the rear spoiler and it'll look totally stealthy.
