Not technically an overpriced car, but how out of your fricken mind would you have to be to pay £148,000 for this (rather hideous) Gulf livery????!!!!! That has to go down as probably the most ludicrously priced optional extras I've ever known.

Black with orange wheels you might get away with. Might.

Usually you can't go wrong with Gulf colours - but that just doesn't do this car any favors... maybe if it was the more modern Gulf colours (darker blue)

In the late 90s and early 2000s Evo 2s were 15-20 grand. I could've had a Sport Evo for 6 grand, alebit a rough one. You could get solid non special edition E30s for 3-4 grand from Europe. They were just used cars at that point.

Spotless Evo 2 Integrales could be had for 8 grand if you were dillgent. I found a brand spanking new Integrale Martini 5 hidden in the bowels of a Lancia dealership and that went to the UK for 17 grand in about 2001.

I only ever saw a couple of 190 Evo 1s for sale and they were about early 10s. No one was ever interested in 190 Evos of any sort in the UK at least. I certainly sounded out potential interest enough times.

Everything was comparative peanuts back then. You could've had a 288 GTO for 140 grand. Lancia 037 and S4 Stradales were 30-50 grand. Ex works examples of either were 75-100.

Yeah I’m old enough to half remember some of the prices. I don’t remember the price differential being as extreme as 10-20x though. Wow.

Not all that different for any fast Ford though. But all of those prices mentioned are German and Italian prices. They were still a fair bit higher in the UK at the time and it took a while for people to cotton on to the discrepancy.

The late 90s to early 2000s were kind of a weird time overall. It was long after the late 80s bubble but I think its effects were still being felt as there was no prospect of another one on the horizon.

Even when everyone knew plenty of these cars were very special it didn't really reflect in their demand or prices. I knew a bloke who chipped a desperate seller down to £19,000 for an RS200. I pondered an Audi Sport Quattro for £33,000 but it didn't have the original engine block.

I remember Alfa SZs being advertised in the back of the Sunday Times when they were launched for £110,000 in 89/90. I bought a couple ten years on for around £12,000.

I read that and thought "that car looks like it would cost about £148,000, what's the problem?"
Then I clicked the link and realised I had misunderstood and that was just the cost of the colours. I think you're right, that is seriously overpriced!

It’s not a pretty car at the best of times, but it looks a lot worse on that ridiculously priced finish

At £148k, I'd probably consider buying it! Ha ha.

I don't care how rich you are, at what point do you stop and say, "Just a minute...you want me to pay you £148k to have the bonnet in blue??? ps off...".

What a spectacular business model that they've located customers who will actually pay it!!!

Charges like that probably help some people actually buy houses from the commission.

If a zero was removed from the price, far better cars could still be bought for much less.

Of the 5 for sale on Auto Scout, 4 are more expensive. Which would lead me to believe it's not even slightly over priced, and that's its priced correctly.
Given there’s a 190 Cosworth currently for sale which was driven by a John Watson in that race for less than this, I’m also saying it’s over priced....
The €175k Watson car is a 2.3-16v pre any kind of Evo malarky ( https://www.mercedes-fans.de/magazin/news/sterne-u...). The link above is for the full on Evo 2. It may seem insane to spend over a £100k on a 190, but it's mid level priced. The best ones go for double that:

Fair enough, in the long run I'll guess that history and provenance will be the greater investment and they're are only four cars from that race still around apparently, but those 190 evo auction prices are nuts...

I don’t think that’s too bad.

It’s a rare car, in a rare and desirable colour with low owners and mileage and full history

There’s an identical one, albeit with very low mileage currently for sale at £45k
There is never a lack of supply of Z4MC.

Is red really a desirable colour? I like red, but red has always been unpopular in BMW circles.

Values are going down and cars are taking an age to sell.

The car up for £13,200 looks far better value.
It's strange that there are always plenty for sale, seeing as only about 600 came to the UK. confused So maybe not exceptionally rare, but certainly not plentiful.

I would have liked an Imola Red one, but bought a Silver Grey one with Imola Red seats last week. Might as well add a gratuitous photo in case anyone is interested!

OK it's done 76K miles and had 7 previous owners, but it was on Ebay for £14K, so £23,950 certainly looks absurd to me!

Before I bought mine I noticed that an Imola Red one that was on AutoTrader a few weeks ago for £15,500 went to auction at Barons and didn't sell. Neither did the Silver Grey with Red one at BCA Blackbushe a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks, that photo was taken by the previous, previous owner!

After a 140 mile drive home in cold damp conditions on the A1, A1(M) and M25 it is filthy now, but hopefully only temporarily.

Not really. I'd have one if I had that sort of money lying around, and so do others it seems..

I wouldn't, rarity aside they weren't THAT special.

And the 4pot motor wasn't exactly enthralling.

That’s a cheap one......

Mind boggling. Some clearly view them differently from the way I do.

Does anyone else think Lupo GTIs are crazy prices when compared with other lupos/small cars of that age?

I’d still have one in a heartbeat. As for prices, I recall them being advertised back in 2006 for £40-50k. That would have bought a lot of rare 964 or 993 back then, which is arguably even more valuable now

AMG-pack 190 Evo1s were still available for low £20Ks in 2011, but then I don’t think they ever had near the same desirability as the EvoII
