As I recall the M4 has three lanes, for overtaking etc?
So all the other dawdlers 'hypermiling' in Lane 1 at 50mph, now have to pull out into lane 2, causing a queue of traffic crawling along at 50mph, whilst any larger vehicle that's allowed in lane 3 will also have to move over a lane, slowing lane 3 to 60mph and ripple braking.

The M4 is mad at the moment anyway, too many holidaymakers who haven't seen a motorway since last summer's jaunt to the West Country.

This is the knob thread, so big knobs need big trousers.

Driving up the M74 in a horse lorry yesterday. (That's me, not the thing that makes me think knob)

2 lane piece of road, with signs up informing us that the right hand lane of the 2 was shutting in 800 yards.

I'm in no rush, and I'm in a big truck, so I sit in the queue in lane 1, minding my own business. Plenty of people trying to pass in lane 2, which was pretty much empty, until the sad wker in the black Volvo XC-something-or-other decides he's the lane police and pulls out, covering both lanes so no-one can pass him because he's too fking stupid to understand what a merge in turn is.

He was behind me, so it didn't impact me in the slightest, I suppose I got home ever so slightly quicker as a result, yes still, knob. fking throbber.
As I have said before, it is the British attitude to queueing (nice and orderly) that motivates drivers to prevent 'pushers in' from gaining ground in an underhand way. 'Merge in turn' does not enter the equation.

Surely they have to read the threads before they get to decide they are annoying?

One can normally tell from the thread title.

E.g if threads about asking advice on Jamaica's weather annoy you, then why open up a thread entitled "what's the weather like in Jamaica" and then comment on it?

This happens all the time on the A36 into Salisbury, was a van blocking the lanes at least 2 miles from the merge point once. Then at the weekend some Up! tried to stop me zip merging, unfortunately I have a proper sized engine so that put a stop to that. Then a taxi did it to a 1-series behind. I almost waved the BMW in front of me but I was too far forwards really and I just thought I'd stay out of whatever world the knobber of a taxi driver was in.
Ha ha. Letting other people in drives the 'tards nuts.

Some knob refused to let me merge in turn at the J10 roadworks of the M4 last year. Unfortunately for him, he was driving a new car, and I was driving a B-reg Land Rover 110, complete with cow dents. He lost. I then proceeded to let 6 cars from the merging lane in ahead of me. I only moved on when he started to open the driver's door .... and then stopped 30 yards later and let a few more in. I reckon I took 10 years off his life....

There is a difference though between merging and racing up the outside lane past obviously queuing traffic to push in at the front. I know it probably wouldn't cost me 5 seconds but there's something in me that just can't let that happen.
Sorry! Human nature.

Merge in turn doesn't enter the equation because the self-appointed road captains are either a) too stupid to remember the basic principles of driving or b) are unpleasant, small-minded, selfish people.

FFS there would be no ability to "race down the outside" if people used both lanes.... Been done to death this one.

Think that's bad? Try the latter part of the M5 when they finally get to the West Country, with the added bonus of being more tired, irritable, unreasonable and with a now thoroughly car-sick child/dog/or both in the back. Then repeat for the journey back!

Have mucho sympathy for you up country folks. I have a niece in Lincoln and dread the journey. From Cornwall alls well usually until the W-S-Mare turn then its drag yer ass all the way past Brizzle. The A46 or M42/A46. Looking at traffic then heading south doesn't make me a happy camper for whats ahead in 3 days time.

Pootling along the M1 yesterday at 70mph in L1 approaching and entry slip road, lorry with a Clio behind so I move into L2. I'm level with the Clio when it decides to ignore L1 and head straight to L2 without looking. It's a miracle this Clio didn't side swipe me as she swung into L2 like a racing driver. I slammed on and there must have been a hair between the back of her car and the front of mine. As I slammed on I blared the horn to try and get her to realise I was there so what did she do? Absolutely nothing, carried on as if nothing happened but sat in L2 at 60mph. I overtook and she carried on looking straight ahead seemingly oblivious. As I got past and pulled back into L1, she starts flashing her lights and giving me the coffee beans. She sat behind me for about 5 minutes doing this.

WTF is wrong with people? I take avoiding action and prevent a serious accident, yet somehow it's my fault.

The best cure for this is to use the 2nd lane. Don't hold it up, just use it normally.

This drives me mad, had some guy straddle both lanes in a 5 series estate a week ago then as people went round him onto the other side of the road he just swerved out on someone. Just picture this he swerved not only into the second lane, which he was partially in, but onto the other side of the road! Fortunately I slipped past him 2 cars earlier but if that was me he done that to I would of probably dragged him out of his car. Incredible to watch. How they didn't crash I'll never know.

But it comes back to my general rule of don't try to police the roads. If someone wants to get past let them. Unless it's going to result in an immediate, or a high risk of an, accident just let them get on with it.

Also to all the knobs on their phones while they're behind me. Sadly I'm truly at the mercy or their incompetence..
There is stretch of road on the outskirts of Cambridge on Trumpington Road that goes from one lane to two then back to one again, and as I head out in the morning, I often see some self important spacktard on the 2 lane stretch straddling the middle of the lanes to stop people coming past. Tossers. What do they think the extra lane is for - decoration?
Try the road from Babraham/Abington towards Linton. 2 lanes of available space, filtering down to one on entry to the village. Every day, you get a cocksocket in a van trying to block you from using Lane 2. Luckily, the central reserve is very smooth, and wide, and it's easy to get past.

I predict WD39 any second now with his APIS banner/tattoo across his heart... hehe

I have an old Jeep GC that I find handy for dealing with rude people who try to block or barge.... I just ignore them. Drive into me if you like, we can see who comes off worse afterwards :-)

I just hope WD39 doesn't intentionally try and block people when using L2 for the merge, or block people out of a merge. Do you WD? frown

My main gripe about merge in turn are the aggressive drivers who try and get that last space ahead when the merge occurs. I can see why that infuriates people. I position my car centrally when the dashed lines end in order to prevent numpties forcing their way into a gap which clearly isn't there. But more often than not people simply don't care and rather have an accident to get one space ahead at the end of the merge.. Knobs.
