I feel a bit dirty, but I agree with you.

Nothing wrong with that car that can't be changed very cheaply. Infact, with the sale fo the wheels, you could come out with a tank of fuel.

If the hog is an easy fix, I may just snaffle it.
Thanks for the vindication. If it was more local to me I'd be tempted. I'm thinking that long term an E34 might be a cheaper car to run than an E39 since the new MOT rules re lights/electrics.

Hadn't twigged on the wheels being a potentially forced change due to metrics. The dealer puff puts me off but I think it's force of habit for many, the rest of his stuff didn't seem exactly bombsite material.

I don't think it does, I also don't think it looks or drives anything like an E34 M5 and avoid buying cars from traders who say st like that.
I suspect it doesn't drive all that differently to an E34 M5 - they're both E34s and this is a Sport with a 12v version of the 24v M5 engine. Some people seem to think the letter M involves fairy dust.

BMW dealers might tax you heavily on that fairy dust, but I've owned an E34 530i with MTech suspension and driven a late 6sp 3.8 M5, and they're not that different in behaviour. Frankly I think the M5 is far too high-geared for the UK when its engine needs revs but even 3rd will run to 100mph. For the money, I'd take a 540i over an M5 every time now. And that's a shame because I loved the M5 to bits until I actually drove one. Still love it as much as other E34s, just don't really see the value in them.

Sorry, the dirty comment was aimed at V8mate
And I'm sure his thanks should have been aimed at me ;-)

I wasn't that impressed with the E34 M5 I drove (3.8 6 speed). They are heavy, the engine lacks low end flexibility, steering box instead of rack and pinion, didn't sound that great, notchy gear change. That said, once you get the engine on song it does shift pretty well. I'd imagine an E39 would better it in every possible way.

Except the E39 M5 is also heavy (over 150kg heavier than E34 and it feels it - ALL the time), also has a steering box rather than a rack, sounds too muted and too much like a vanilla BMW engine, rather than an M one as standard (the S38 never sounds anything but an M engine from tickover to redline) and also has a notchy gearchange (possibly related to them both having Getrag Type D gearboxes).

Being lazy and valuing fewer gearshifts and lower cruising rpm at speed, the E39 holds the strongest appeal for me - but I really wouldn't mind owning an E34 some day either as that big six has more character, which the V8 counters its defecit thereof with sheer wallop. Both have their considerable merits and I can't call one objectively or subjectively "better" than the other.

hmmm well I'm basing my opinion on having driven a late E34 M5 Touring and 530i (not a 535 so you may have a point. The 3.8L car was a totally different driving experience IMO.

A moot point though as V8 pointed out I'm applying premium car buying logic to a smoker barge.

I rather think it is. Can't believe how cheap these are - I guess because they're thirsty.

Bit of a BOBFOC though isn't it...
