The Landie above is the epitome of a sleeper.

IMO, as well as the descriptions above, a sleeper would almost certainly not have the engine and running gear it came out of the factory with. The whole idea is, looks a like a shopping trolley/Dad Cab, but has completely unexpected performance. It looks "sleepy" but if you try your luck, you're going to lose.

A Golf GTI with 3 times the power is not a sleeper, it's modified hot hatch. Which is exactly why the Subaru above also fails. I used to have a Monaro, which is essentially an Omega Coupe with a big engine. But everyone knows it came out of the factory with a comedy V8 fitted, so it's not a sleeper. But if you take, say, an Astra Coupe (other regular 4-pot coupes may be available) and drop an LS crate lump in, then yes, you DO have a sleeper.

I like it when the sleepers remain untouched inside too where possible.

This 500 bhp cosworth powered transit connect, for example (although it did have a fuel cell in the back)

Also spotted this for sale the other day apparently running over 400 bhp. I would slap some steel wheels on it, though...

I'm going to throw my one out there at the risk of getting sleeper definition wrong but here goes...

Started Life as a boggo standard non turbo Mitsubishi GTO making a grand total of 170hp, with only a nice set of wheels to compliment the car. I slapped a set of WRX 13T turbo's to the standard NA engine and run it permanently on 20% in tank methanol.

Runs 11.84 @119mph 1/4 and 3.6 second 0-60 with all the creature comforts it left the factory with like granddad leather seats and AC etc.

yes, average joe and granddad prolly expect it to be 'fast' but most car people/enthusiast still relate it to a slow ass massively over weight GTO, which with 500hp and 560ftlbs its not wink

That is definitely not a sleeper.

A sleeper is a completely standard car, that in my opinion not a single person would look at it and go " Oooh I bet that's fast" or "Yeh that looks sporty".

As said, an old stty (in the nicest way possible) Defender with no visual modifications but has a monster engine is the exact definition of a sleeper.

fair enough...car people always refer to them as dog slow and as it left the factory it was. Every saxo/Type-R/hot hatch st box want a race because they think its still as slow as usual and will hammer it.

Agreed though there are some PROPER sleepers on here, Stevies 1000+ Granada is something epic (not seen if its in this thread).

me too. it's not a hard concept to understand what a sleeper is. I can only assume these people who get it wrong are abit "special". I don't think we need to debate it anymore or clarify on the definition. just respond by saying "not a sleeper idiot" or do that effect.

This is my sleeper that I've had for a few months. Surprises a few people who think it's just an old Subaru with body kit bolted on. Remove the rear spoiler and it'll look totally stealthy.

I'd like to make this into more of a sleeper. It's an E320 CDI so has the 3.2 straight six turbo diesel, makes 210bhp and 370lbs or torque. The 0-60 time is only about 8.5 seconds which is isn't terrible and the in gear acceleration is good. Thing is, I can't help thinking that a remap would make it into quite a sleeper.

My only concern would be that it's got a fair few miles on it (110k) and I don't want to compromise it's reliability!
