Said earlier, that ours was just a fairly dull, not that quick or exciting car. The new ones might be better but that’s why.

Well this is 'ours'...

It's an absolute hoot to drive, great fun, very predictable little car. Much better than the MK2.5 that preceded it and threw the wife into the scenery.

Couldn’t agree more - I’ve had 2 in my time and both were great drives.

Years ago I was never much of a fan of them. Although now it is definitely a car I would love to own one day for sure.

It’s good fun embarrassing Elises with an MX5 on track days though. I’m no driving god but I was surprised at how the two models mixed it on track, and even I found it surprisingly easy. smile

Same here. Love hunting McLarens and Ferraris in my Elise.

In every way they’re cheap - cheap to buy, cheap to maintain (especially if you’re hands on), cheap to insure - bang for buck I think they’re great cars. Definitely give it a go.

Well this looks to be going well. laugh

Based on this, it seems I bought a non-Sports car on Thursday - because it weighs 1,495kg and isn't a convertible!

But how exactly can any 2-seater with a BMW S54 engine not be a sports car? (It's a Z4M Coupe).

I'm not sure why you should look down on the Mx5 either. It is an affordable fun car which is practical enough to be used as a daily. An Elise is twice the price, and while it is dynamically significantly superior it is an expensive weekend car for most people. I have used one as a daily, but most wouldn't, so you need another car for daily duties. If you can't afford or justify two cars to meet your needs the MX5 seems like a perfectly sensible choice. At the price there really isn't any open topped competition - which is why it's the world's most popular sportscar.
MX5s are easily and affordably upgraded to fantastic driving machines. out of the box little beats an Elise, but 5-10k of mods transforms an MX5. for understandable reasons people see that as an unjustified "investment". but for pure driving pleasure amortised over a few years, money well spent. i'd do it again rather than buy a modern 50k "sports car".
An exception might be the A110, but haven't driven one yet.

hehe you seem to find lots of things boring! Maybe it's just that everything is boring (to you) compared to an Elise?

I've driven a few Boxsters recently (986) and they were good fun, certainly much more visceral than almost any modern car, even if slower than many.

Don’t confuse merely being fast with being a sports car. An MG Midget 1275 is a sports car and that isn’t fast. The BMW is a GT and a good one at that.

A Sports car should be so impractical you can't fit a weekend's luggage in it.

The Z4 M coupe has a large enough boot to take enough luggage for a long weekend.

You have to put it on a luggage rack in a midget because your boot is full of the spare parts and tools you might need for the weekend.

Congrats on finally upgrading to the proper one Mr T. smile

The Midget certainly WAS rightly regarded as a Sportscar in its day. Now, I would regard it as a Classic car because, if it were produced today it would be dismissed as simply inadequate in every way dynamically as a sports car. A fun car certainly - but I'd class it with a Morgan 3 wheeler - an enjoyable anachronism.

True but I can't be doing with cars that don't entertain me.
