So do tell why BMW, in their infinite wisdom, fitted the smg box on their most focused car that they know would be destined for the 'Ring.

The M cars get exempted from run-flats. Electric power steering too IIRC. Speaks volumes. Yet they fit them with SMG and DCT (which the rest don't get).

I don't understand what most peoples problem is with flappy paddle gearboxes. I can understand not wanting an auto in a performance orientated car as it blunts performance and removes control over the gears away from the driver, however most of the flappy paddle gearboxes i.e. one's which still have a clutch and not a torque converter I have tried recently have been fantastic.

Don't get me wrong, I like stirring a decent manual box just as much as the next man but imo a decent flappy paddle manual isn't any worse an experience, it's just different. For me it's just as exciting coming up to a bend, pushing forward on the paddles to drop a couple of gears, getting your line right and then pulling back on the paddles as you accelerate out of a perfect corner. You can still change gear when you want, you can keep both hands on the wheel and most importantly, you can pretend to be Louis Hamilton. If it wasn't any good, why would they use it in F1?

While I am glad that the 1M has a manual gearbox, I also wouldn't have minded if they had put some sort of SMG\DCT box in it. The SMG gearbox in the CSL really is a great bit of kit when you get used to it and certainly wouldn't put me off owning one.

Shame Merc can't source a manual box for the C63 AMG as well

Only thing that puts me off as they've stuck all the other good bits in the car

Indeed.

I'd prefer either a proper TC auto with all it's advantages, or a proper manual, with all it's interactivity and flexibility.

DSG to me seems like the middle ground of the two. It's neither a good auto like a proper auto, nor is it an involving tactile flexible gearbox like a manual.

It fulfills the speed role well, and the lower CO2 rating well (only through a flawed test that allows it to run higher gears than an equivalent manual)... apart from those benefits, it's potentially more costly to fix/go wrong, probably heavier, and as we have seen many have lower torque loadings than an equivalent manual.

A good manual isn't a detriment to driver observation imo, if you counter the arguement of it being a distraction with it also helping to generate involvement and thought from the driver. All in it probably balances out, hence why neither auto nor manual really command a premium on insurance vs each other from what I can see.

You're being too kind GTRene. I've seen better displays in my local Asda car park on a sat night! Then he has the nerve to wave to the 'crowd'. I'd be amazed if BMW were happy with this!

have you heard evo's review of this car? they said the 1M felt like an NA engine. it was still pulling right at the redline. it has more low down torque etc, so on that basis from what people who have driven one, it's power delivery throughout the rev range is better....

turbo lag days are long gone, especially in high performance cars.
I'd agree with that in principle. But a "torque everywhere", lagless turbo lump that spins up to 6.5k rpm just isn't anything like a highly strung 8.5k+ rpm NA engine building up a head of steam, sure it;s more of a peaky delivery, but that's a huge part of the appeal for some.

Just listen to the two in anger and tell me they're the same...
I'm sure the better remaps will give the 54TT close to NA throttle response and they sound OK if with the right pipes around them....

yes but no manufacturer can put up their brand new cars at used car prices. it's ridiculous. also, as great as an E30 M3 is, for a track tool, this will be far superior in every way. AND it won't have rust in it, it'll have a warranty etc, and be much faster. if you want to strip it out etc, i'm sure it'll be bloody good fun too.

Not sure why someone would buy one of these as a track tool over something lighter and more focused. However, as an everyday performance car it appears to be a good option.

Has anyone got a copy of the UK options prices? Perhaps someone that has placed a deposit already?

I notice in the US it comes with a number of things as standard that were options on my 1er. I know its a different market and they offer different packages but if it came reasonably spec'd from the outset and I didn't have to add £9 grands worth of options to get it how I wanted it I might be more interested. I am also mindful that there are only 400 coming to the UK.

EDIT:

Options and pricing are not on the website but standard equipment is!

Leather, cruise and a few other bits are standard which all helps. smile
