I think its the lower front lip which gives it an old school yank muscle car feel. Like.

Well I think its actually meant to look more like the Datsun 510, hence the livery on the one that was pictured originally but it does give off a mean muscle vibe which I love.

If it had four headlights I'd be going with 1971 Dodge Challenger all day long

A lot of Jap stuff can be seen in an equivalent American car from a few years previously. Not that I'm saying they copied exactly...

But...

1974 Mazda RX-4

1972 Plymouth Roadrunner

Shall we say "homage" rather than "plagiarisation"?

The livery as well is based off this 510

Rocket bunny also make a "Boss" Kit for the RX7 which is based off the RX3. I'd post a picture but its not easy to find one that isn't a rendering. I don't think its very popular as it isn't their finest styling hour thats for sure (In my opinion!)

I wouldn't say that these cars were copying US cars as around the late 60's/early 70's Nissan were actually producing alot of their cars for the US Market first and foremost.
I know that the Datsun 240/260/280z are primarily USDM cars, there were a few in Japan but far more produced for the USDM, I believe the same can be said for the Datsun 510 at the time. So I believe they styled their cars for a primarily american audience, although that might mean taking a bit of tracing paper to a few famous american brands wink
That also explains their boom in popularity and reason for making the Rocket bunny body kit as theres a large market even in the Japanese car scene for american cars these days.

Japanese cars of the 60's and 70's were well known for being heavily influenced by American cars of the era. Early Celica were known as Japanese Mustang.

Probably just the photo filter, but does anyone else think that image looks computer generated?

I think Jay Murray’s FD Boss is a nicer looking interpretation of the same kit:
