The design is a comprimise (as are all car designs) between performance/handling, comfort and price. Sure you can make it lighter but not without impacting comfort and price.

I notice the handbrake is being used to start the slides.
That's standard practice in drifting.

Good video though. That's pretty impressive drifting for a standard 200hp car!
And add the fact that the speeds are low in that video compared to a track where weight transfer alone can unstick the tail.

The human design is to have 2 legs to operate most efficently, so, by removing a leg to save weight it is ruining the design! A little less sound deadening, thinner glass, less bolster on the seats or winding the window down when its hot to save on air con is not ruining the design, it will still handle equally as well and perform slightly better!
I dont know why keep trying to condemn my discussion with Kambite, weight could be saved without additional cost or flawing the design! I am sure you will keep trying to argue, but my point has been made! I enjoyed the discussion smile
And cutting off the extra wheelbase and accompanying sheetmetal/glass could also ruin a design that was, from the beginning, intended to accomodate 4 passengers. The simple fact is, just about *any* car could probably be made lighter by the methods you described, so what is the relevance of the statement "it could have been made lighter?"
You also don't know by what lengths Toyota have already addressed thinner glass (made even thinner, would it still be legal? you haven't answered), nor have you provided examples of your own claimed deletion of 100kg from vehicles. Nor did you answer the point about a limited customer base that could result in *higher* per-unit costs. Because you can't ensure that there will be any sizeable portion of the buying public wanting such a car; sorry, but Caterham sales volume probably is not what Toyota had in mind in making this a profitable venture. As for demographics, consider this:
% of owners who opted for the stereo/AC delete package on the M3 CSL: 15
% of owners who opted for the delete package on the Viper ACR: ~13

Simple fact is, the portion of the public willing to buy the kind of car you're proposing is incredibly small. And you haven't taken into account that lighter versions could be in the pipeline anyway. You haven't made your point at all.

I cant understand the negative comments on this thread. Its a 25 grand sports coupe with rear wheel drive, a high revving naturally aspirated engine, not many gizmos and its light. Surely thats what a lot of us were hankering after? I actually think it looks great and I think the price/performance ratio is just right. The whole idea of this car was something that wasnt ballistically quick, grippy and over-complicated. People are totally missing the point. Its also not as if its gonna slide off the road either. It has up to date traction control and decent modern tyres, so its hardly an E30 BMW with trailing arms suspension, it it?

Just be glad Toyota and Subaru have made a RWD alternative to the BMW/Mercs out there and stop moaning about it....

yes

It's not as if there aren't other options more like what people think this should be.

What 2+2 coupes have been significantly under 1200kg in the last, say, ten years? I have no particular evidence, I'm just going on gut-feel from the other cars that are out there.

2002 Hyundai Coupe 2.0 (RD2 chassis) weighed 1150Kg with all the toys. (Aircon, cruise, electric sunroof, electric mirrors & aerial, leather trim etc). Admittedly not RWD though.

The 'alternatives' are precisely why every petrolhead should be glad to see the arrival of the GT 86 and BRZ! hehe
