That's a bold claim. There must have been loads prior to1985
Not as quick as an M5, but 250bhp and 0-60 in 7.3 sec must have been astonishing in a big saloon in 1968!
Please do not burst the BMW owners bubble....."first fast 4 door".....LOLNot as quick as an M5, but 250bhp and 0-60 in 7.3 sec must have been astonishing in a big saloon in 1968!

And the golf gti wasnt the 1st hot hatch. Now shall we move on.
But as it was the car that coined the phrase it was. There may have been a couple of quickest hatches before it, but no one called them that. So it was the first car to be called a hot hatch and therefore the first hot hatch. Now shall we move on?
Another vote for the Alfa 156 in unadorned pre facelift form, the 159, and the pre facelift Maserati QP V.
I always preferred the Series 3 XJ to the earlier iterations.
The Tatra is fantastic, as are some of the big Citroens.
If I had to choose just one, though, it would be the Ferrari Pinin.
Good thread!

Universally, realistically, as the "best looking" I am thinking over of some similar previous suggestions -
They are a shorter list of cars can truly be considered closer to "the best looking ever" beyond the bmw and audi suggestions. You gotta be looking at stuff like
1960s Jaguar S type/ mk2
Maserati Quattroporte
Aston Martin Rapide
Elextra Electric 4 door
Bristol 405 4 Door Saloon
etc
Even a Morris Minor 1000 has something a bit more affectionate towards "best looking" than another dull german taxi.....
Gotta to be looking a bit further the BMW and Audi fan club ("I'm in love with my car") and put on your slightly broader / grown up hat on guys.
The list isn't limited to only cars you can afford or currently own, it was "best looking car ever".
Push the boat out - It can be something a bit more aspiration than a factory production inspired 5 series let your imagination truly fly - lol;) or, perhaps not
I don't think it is as objective as that - this is a case of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Some people like flowing, rounded, organic volumes and lines; other people prefer crisp, hard edges, and I think this has yielded almost two separate groups of 'best looking' four-doors which fall into these two distinct groups. Personally I'm with you and like rounded shapes like those you mention, but I can't find a good objective reason to disqualify the other camp They are a shorter list of cars can truly be considered closer to "the best looking ever" beyond the bmw and audi suggestions. I've searched for "Elextra electric 4 door"....no images whatsoever of such a car.......
Not sure I'd necessarily count it unless / until it reaches production, personally.
Whilst I agree with the pretty 156 and handsome 159 being included in this thread, as an example of how tastes vary I cannot fathom why people are including the current Giulia which manages to look both blobby and slab sided, and the old Giulia from the 60's which looks worse than a Lada Riva thanks to its stick-on looking grille and mismatched twin headlamps. Both are hideous.

Certainly a case of beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for my part the 105 Giulia is one of the best looking Saloons of the 60’s and the new Giulia the best of this era too.Edited by glazbagun on Saturday 27th April 16:04
I’ve said it since the late Nineties and I still maintain the 156 is the best looking Saloon Car yet built and likely to remain so, given the constraints placed upon modern car design. The Sportwagon takes the best looking Estate award too.
Other handsome beasts are the 405, Quattraporte, Ghibli, early XJ’s and the NSU R080.

The M5 was the original Uber saloon for the masses, it’s undeniably a classic.I know it’s fashionable to dislike BMW but this place is getting very weird.
I don’t dislike BMW at all. Have even owned two, although neither were fast ones. I guess the M5 could be considered for the European market in some ways. But then I suspect in its day most people would have said a 3.8 MkII Jag was a pretty hot performance saloon too, which pre-dates the M5.
And if we head over the Atlantic. Chevy offered a 4 door Impala SS back in 1961 with a 409ci (6.7 litre) motor putting out 425hp.
