True, but apparently it was a wedding car.

How gutted would you be if that turned up. Unless it was to escort the MiL for the (not so) secret amusement ...

BMW X5 3.0i

97,936 miles

£3,100.

Not the more desirable diesel but a good price smile

Advert may as well have said:
"A veritable ginger stepchild of the range, if ever there was one."
A curio nonethless, though. I thought it was only Plod who were able to order the X5 to Spanish specification.
A ginger stepchild when new makes it more desirable at this end of the market, IMHO.

Bomb-proof M54 so no turbo issues to worry about as you would have with the diesel. Six speed manual may not suit the character but again, removes a potential point of failure vis. the auto box. Sport seats are a good plus too. I quite want it to be honest...

Some successful barging to report: first long journey in the sub-£500 LS400 took the family away on a weekend break without a hiccup. Sat on the motorway in silence at 85, cruise on, air con keeping us cool. 26mpg average.

A very slight 60mph steering shimmy is the one and only fault: an egg in the tyre has since been discovered. I'll put the spare on. It's getting under my skin: might even start a thread in Readers Wives.

Just realised I actually paid less for it than my first car, a crabbing, leaking Mini that you had to hold in gear and that once shat a lump of filler the size of my fist out of the wing on a hump back bridge. That was 25 years ago. How is this even possible??

Sounds like you snaffled an absolute bargain. Marvellous stuff.

I am home from collecting the Retro Rides 190E LE. 150 miles, just over 1/4 of a tank, 75mph all the way, ~3500rpm as we know. Impressed really!

Now, the coolant temp never went above 80 and usually sat at 75 - is this normal?

Looking forward to tinkering over the weekend.
The auto boxes are only 4 speed so the engine is buzzing at motorway speeds. The 5 speed manual is doing just 2700 (from memory) at 70.

As for temperature? It depends what thermostat it has in there. From memory there are 2 options: 79 and 82. Mine is new...it's 82... and it sits just above the 80 mark as you'd expect. Get stuck in traffic and it will raise towards the middle of the guage. It's worth doing this on the driveway just to make sure your fan kicks in to cool things off - they can wear.

Enjoy!
Needs a thermostat. £15 at main dealer. While you're at it, change the plastic lid for a metal one, £10 from Febi (#30080).
It has the metal lid, which is why it surprised me it seems to need a new stat! I will add it to the list.

Also, the headlight throw switch 'hisses' when you move it quickly - normal?

Lastly, the boot doesn't seem to lock off the C/L which is slow on the doors too.

Wasn't this voted as the LEAST reliable BMW in recent years? At that age it's ripe for suspension, gearbox and engine woes. Haggle hard! Look on BMW forums for info. Mate has a 4.4v8 and he spent more than the purchase price in the first year keeping it on the road. Always something electrical going wrong, and suspension parts seemed to be made of butter given how long they lasted. Then he had to get a £2500 recon gearbox for it, and his had only done around 70k miles from memory.

Had a lovely barging trip to France earlier this month.
3200 miles in just under 2 weeks in the R129 with only a grumbling front wheel bearing to deal with on our return. Managed to average 26mpg over one tank of fuel but more usually 25. I'm happy with that for a 23 year old 5 litre V8!

Most of the miles were top down and it struck me how many admiring glances we got - especially on the south coast around Beziers. It was often the focus of attention entering and leaving the marina on the Canal du Midi. smile

Indeed. As alluded to above however, this car has the extremely robust M54 and not the more delicate M62. Manual 'box, too.

Suspension will be a weak point, granted, but this applies to any ageing 2-tonne motor.

Meant to post this back in June, but I entered the world of (mini) barges 1-5 large by purchasing a Lexus IS250 SE-L. Petrol, auto, loads of kit including pointless electric rear blinds, steering wheel that slides away from you when you turn off (and slide back when you turn on, obviously), and baffling sat-nav/infotainment unit. Metallic red, 85k miles, spotless beige leather, FSH, £4500, first to see did indeed buy. Overall, great car in its own way, just lacking a bit of character. Fits the bill for the time being though. Good (mini) barge imo, assuming ongoing reliability.

Headlight switch normal I think.

Central locking not. Likely disconnected at the boot and leaking air. New element should be cheap. Remove boot trim and investigate!

The joys of SL-ing. I averaged similar to you on a trip to the Eifel and Spa including some flat out autobahn blasts-top down throughout. I also found the car garnered respect far in excess of it's modest cost in the UK. I suppose our continental cousins must have more regard for them than in Blighty as values are much higher.

Liking the oddbod X5 manual, I need a towcar, if I wasn't going on holiday I'd be making an offer for that.

Just spoke with the vendor who did not sound very Crawley so a plus point at the start.

It sounds like an alright car and will come with a new MOT. What I need to establish next is if the marks / dents are parking scuffs or if they are all rust spots. There is some rust visible in the pics around the rear bumper and the massive section of paint that is missing.

Anyone got a checklist for the W220? I know mainly rust but where are the hidden hotspots? Next step is I am going to get a friend to go and have a look since it turns out he lives very close to the vendor.

Waiting to see the results of this one with bated breath. We might have a thread winner if it works at this price.

Single nicest engine I've ever used/driven/commanded/helmed/whatever. Extraordinary.

Just whatever you do - don't jump in two footed on the central locking...I chipped £200 from the seller of mine for non functioning central locking on a door. He gladly obliged. After a couple of days it started working and has ever since. Either something was stuck and freed itself or the battery needed a bit of a charge courtesy of the alternator.

Hope you're enjoying the car... It really looks smashing.
