My Super V8 hit the limiter at just over 160mph (260kph) and so did my 650i. The M6 gets to indicated 170mph when it hits its limiter.
indicated 170 in a BMW with limited is real 155 as far as i know? . Mates m3 e46 did the same. 155 real plus 10% overead on speedo equals indicated 170...BigBen said:
If any threadists near Cambridge want their Mercedes de limited I can help, although only to 300kph in the version of STAR I have.

In Lux Lexus news, the barge rewarded my 155 mph run yesterday with a blowing exhaust on a trip to a charming German tourist spot today. It's far from being as irritating as a modern Golf but is a little unseemly and will need to get fixed. At this rate I'll be dropping off the Lexus as I collect the SLC. As we've said before, old cars really only work reliably as part of a fleet.
That's rotten luck..... But what a way to get it I've not tried maxing the 460, I did the E65 though. Maybe one day interesting thought..... How many of us bargistas have maxed their barge, and what was the speed? E65 went off the clock (160) but not by much!
Hope it doesn't cost too much for you!

Over 20 years ago when I bought a 635CSi my housemate and I decided a max speed test on the M4 was in order - it indicated about 145 (which looking back is frankly terrifying considering the car now) but my mate was happy he could talk us out of any 'attention' as he was Avon & Somerset plod himself.Since then I have fallen into the narrow niche of Alpina who remove the BMW speed limiters and pop in 320kph/200mph speedos which aren't actually too optimistic. I have ended up with two UK Alpina models that due to very, very small sales numbers (1 and 2) were left with the standard E34 160mph and the E38 140mph speedo. Whilst I cannot claim to have 'maxed them out' and reached the Alpina claims of 'over 170mph' and over '185mph' I can confirm the existing speedo needles (very, very briefly) continue to rise despite having no scale to score against.

My E36 M3 Evo was pulling off the clock, which is 160 MPH, indicated.
So I suppose 145-ish.
Great car, that was.
Did a top speed run in an MR2 back in the day and did exactly the same as CdG, blew the exhaust flexi out.
Always a good opportunity to replace and improve though.
Had a 996 911 that I never attempted to take any where near top speed.
Shame really, as that would probably have the best top end of any car I’ve owned.

I've had 4 over the years last one (pictured) was a 2.6 Estate i paid £650 for it on eBay, no leather, amazing thing it swallowed an American fridge freezer easily, bought it as i was moving house kept it for 4 years before i sold for £250 it as it had overheating issues, bad oil leaks and rust, still taxed so must be still alive.
£400 over 4 years to use a car as comfy and useful as that?! Wow!W201_190e said:

Is that Haynes?
Yes it is, but as a 'where am I?' quiz question, that's only a 'two compasses' difficulty level. Also, are there some bits of the museum which are a bit harder to get to than the map would suggest? A toilet which is up seventeen flights of stairs and behind a locked gate for example?
Gold, and Brown velour, and tiny wheels and V8 and in thread

Not cheap, but I always think that, about everything.

The BMWs I have had didn't seem to read 10% over when checked against other methods - instead, they have been consistently 2 or 3 mph over at every speed. So all your top ends may be higher than you're assuming
I'm only going on mates old m3 which saw just on 170mph on a few occasions...i don't think they are that fast in reality? I had an old 80s 735i (actually one for this thread, it was a 735i lwb with electric front and rear seats and a special order manual box. That sat at a rock solid 145 mph indicated. Wonder how many exist these days?SpeckledJim said:

I got married at Haynes, so that must be worth some thread points!

I know it just kept passing mot's with very little or no work needed, it also came with a full set of almost new winter tyres and wheels, cam belt had been done and had new front wishbones, only broke down once when the idler pulley seized up and threw the auxiliary belt, a £15 10 minute fix.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
