Not sure why you want an estate and possibly a diesel one at that (but nevertheless a sensible choice)...

Don't buy an M5 just to run it for 3 months, it really wouldn't be worth it.

The 1st gen Audi S8 suggested on the last page looks like a great buy to me and plenty left in the bank for borkage, which even if it does go wrong will be a lot less than an M5.

Not sure what was wrong with my suggestion of a Mazda RX8. One of the later R3 ones. Great value, 4 doors and seats, sporty looks, fun drive. Job done!
The estate is for the space. I often have my Range Rover packed full so even a touring 5 series is smaller. Willing to accept the lack of space for a M5 because of the engine. Really a M5 touring is my perfect car.

Im not your typical 21 year old, I have no interest in a small sporty car right now, it needs to be able to fit building supplies, car wheels/tyres, spare parts, tools etc. I also get fuel costs covered reasons to drive 200+ miles to airports (Mainly edinburgh/glasgow due to flight locations compared to Inverness) to drop off my brother for when he flies to the US so a larger comfortable car is much prefered.

So now you want to fill an M5 with building supplies whilst taking your brother on 200 mile jollies to airports? I've read this whole thread and sat on the fence, but now you've just finally convinced me you're an utter fantasist and attention we.

Go and buy a transit and stop being a cock.
Not every day... But due to my age I can't drive other cars so on occasion it needs to be able to carry suitcases, 4x large bags of laundry weekly (holiday house) and things like a air compressor etc. Not things like wood/plasterboard which would ruin it.

What?
Being fully comp insurance below 25 won't let me drive other cars. Therefor my one car needs to be capable of the things I had listed. Hence why I had rules out all small cars.

No, no, no!! Do not buy a 50k+ car unless you earn decent money. I have a BMW 650i. Valve stem seals WILL need replacing - £3k. Cats replacement - £3k. Tyres are £250 each. It's not an affordable car to run on £600 a month.
Could I ask why you think thats the case? Why will all those fail and cost so much?

Im running a Range Rover for the last year, pretty damn sure it cost far over £50k new.

OP's gone silent...

I'm pretty certain the M5 purchase won't happen, much like the other thread he referred to in his first post:

'I Talked Up Doing a Thing, But Ultimately I Did Another Not-Quite-As-Interesting-Thing'
Op has been busy getting his e38 ready for its Mot today and working on my Range Rover.

No one ever said I am 100% sure im buying an M5. I came here for opinions as I wanted to know running costs etc.

Just to let you all know, the insurance prices I posted before were real. I have nothing to gain by lying, if they were loads more I simply wouldn't pay that much to insure a M5 so I would of ended the thread.

Sorry to bump this but for anyone interested what I have ended up buying I should be collecting it on Sunday provided nothing goes wrong with sorting trailer hire.

On top of what I may be collecting I bought a 2003 Range Rover which should have the smaller bills compared to what im collecting (not an M5 - or is it?)

So long epic thread ends with no M5, another cheap Range Rover (after the one you sold to your mum broke?) and from the sounds of it yet another questionable "project"?

I wish I could say I'm surprised...
The one my mum bought was fixed, all it needed was a £25 plate replaced. Cheap Rangie was bought because I released I couldnt live without a car which can tow 3ton.

The project is very questionable, even I think its a little mad. Money comes and goes so even if it goes tits up (likely) there is no finance involved as its much cheaper.

OP even f your Range Rover can tow 3t, your license doesn't allow you to. You will be limited to 750kg, unless you took an extra test for trailers.
Did that when I was 19, regulariliy tow 3 ton so was finding it a pain without a tow car.

The suspense is killing me. Please tell me it's not an unexpectedly rusty S500 Merc...
I suspect a leggy Audi S8..

Looking forward to your update OP!
Both will be disapointed. They would be smart choices compared to this.

Will update tomorrow when its loaded on the trailer.

Would of had acceptable running costs.

Seems I'm stuck on the side of the road anyway so probably won't be collecting today.

You'd be best buying something thats not 5% of it's original purchase price and fked.
Its about 15-20% of its price new, if I adjust for inflation its less than 2%. Its also majorly fked.

Broke down and had to get recovered home. Glow plug had blown out of the block, easy and cheap fix once it was home but it means I cannot collect till next Sunday now.

Crumbs. So assume it's £1K now, it was £4-5K new, which equals about £50K in today's money. Must be something 1960's or thereabouts.
Think early 70s.

Could be... XJS or XJ12 coupe? Either would be impressive, but could make the M5 seem like an economy run car!
Not a Jag but has a uneconomical large engine too.

Story from what I understand is the guy has 5 of them and used/does run a wedding car business. Bought this one for interior bits for one of his cars but due to his being a shadow 2 they wouldn't fit so he just put them back in the car and never bothered to refit.

Has been sitting for 1-2 years since it last ran and about 7 years since its last Mot. If it is truly awful and will never get back on a road it can be parted out for more than I've paid so worth a shot I reckon.
