Nah I've just heard they're a bit dodgy, lol. They are exceptionally cheap though which is awesome.

Last time I hired a van I used Hertz - only firm in the country that'll hire to me because I'm under 21.
It looks like were going to be mutually weary of eachother when I show up to "accept delivery"! Il make sure I check the car thoroughly before I sign for it and check what the guy has written!

There's fk all wrong with them. And it's a hire car anyway so I think you'll find that the engine revs very well and that it understeers slightly when being ragged to st into a tight bend under heavy braking.

Have fun!

Basically describes my ownership experience thus far.

(in 3 years time, don't buy a 3 year old white Picanto from auction that's owned by Santander....)

This sounds like fantastic fun, the cars will be "so bad, it's good" and the roads around where you are going are absolutely superb!

Lets put it this way.

Given the choice between any car in the world round the M25 or a Picanto over applecross pass i'd choose the Picanto every time

Ragging small hire cars around in convoy is epic fun, I've just finished the Petrolhead Nirvana Sicily Hire Car Challenge so I should know biggrin

So - to roads then ...

Glen Fruin road from Loch Lomond to Garelochhead is lovely and flowing - probably won't suit your picanto, but still worth a blat I'd say.

B863 around Loch Leven is fantastic.

A82 is regularly mentioned as a great road when journalists try to come up with top (howevermany) lists.

Something like this will keep you entertained >> linky << and will be great fun. Make sure you do the Applecross pass in one direction and come back the other way around the coast road, I've been reliably informed it's just as good.

I've done the applecross loop in a caterham and a landrover 90 and to be honest while the car is only a small part of driving around that area.

Top tip don't bother with the applecross inn, go round the by a wee bit and go into the potting shed which is lovely. But that said the langoustine in the applecross inn are very good.

Just go and stop worrying about the car, ignore the badge snobs

Brilliant post mate, will check the google maps link when I'm at the pc(bloody iPhone!). Will definitely look into all of these as the only roads I have my heart set on are the applecross pass and a lap of Skye, and I'll need a bigger itinerary.

Also nice one to all the well wishers, very decent group of lads on here.

Have fun. Despite having a candy-floss machine instead of an engine I'd be interested as to your eventual mpg after having your right foot buried continuously for the entire trip. Don't use the brakes, you'll only slow yourself down. Try and avoid ending-up inverted in a field, on fire, 10 feet away from your mate's Picanto, also inverted and on fire.

If the brakes are going to fade, probably best not to find out as you hurtle down Teuchter Pass towards a 180 hairpin with a 2000' drop down the side of Ben Sheeplover if you don't make the turn.

Do some 2am night drives. It doesn't really get properly dark that far north at this time of year, and the mountains look fantastic in the half-light. Watch out for Bambi.

2 things to mention

1 The challenge in the north east is to find a crap road

2 If you see a petrol station no matter how much is in the tank fill up

Oh and stop at the waterside inn at loch carron and try the challenge breakfast

Yes, even if it's very obvious how much you have left

No, it's the clocks from a MY2009 manual. Mine is exactly the same except the odometer now has a "shift indicator" too.

ETA - I don't know how old your hire car might be, if it's the pre-facelift it'll be worse than that inside I think laugh

Jesus! Wouldn't it be easier just to replace the 'instrument' panel with a big red light marked 'engine running' and a Stop & Go button? wink

biggrin It's awesome, real back to basics stuff.

I do like the fact they did without the things like rev counters, central locking etc but you still have ESP and other safety stuff which some manufacturers would rather give you interior glitz instead of
