What is the collective noun for 2 pillocks?
Uh, pillocks. Are you suggesting a gaggle of geese isn't an example of a collective noun?
See stuff like this every time Im on the A21 near Tonbridge. 2 lanes into 1, but theres always someone who reads the sign that says to use both lanes as make their car 2 lanes wide.
I had this happen while in the company van, I simply drove round the guy and "pushed in" as he would see it.
Daft thing is, if you know the road, you can nip off early,go around a roundabout and join back on the next slip road.
2-lane-tt has no issue with letting cars out the junction that have gone round the roundabout though...

Wow loving how almost every thread I read on here now descends into people trying to pick holes in every aspect of the OP's post followed by everyone trying to pick holes in everyone else's posts!
Personally I'm not bothered either way about letting people into my lane at any point as long as it doesn't cause me to have to take action to avoid them trying forcing their way in at the last possible moment, if someone makes their intention clear and I am able to do so I'm quite happy to try and create a gap by adjusting my speed and road position.
What I am curios to hear about from the use all the "lanes until you have to merge" posters is when is it acceptable to merging in turn? Rather than just driving down a lane that you know is going to close until you have nowhere left to go other than into a space that doesn't exist, causing others to have to take more dramatic action than would have been necessary to allow you in.
Also and how does doing that help traffic flow when if you'd changed lanes prior to running out of road those around you would only have to make very minor changes (if any at all)?
I can see how using all three lanes as much as possible can help reduce the length of the cue, but the same amount of traffic still has to get through the same restriction so I can't see how it makes allot of difference to the flow of traffic either?
Trying to self police any of this stuff is just idiotic though regardless of the reason why!

This thread has confused the he'll out of me, I'm amazed at the overwhelming response from people being that driving all the way up to the cones is the right thing to do, I confess this annoys the he'll out of me especially when in a near stationery queue, but having read this I can now kind of see the sense in doing it, fortunately I don't have a need to use motorways and even less rarely in rush hour but what I do next time now I have no idea, out of sheer panic and confusion I'll probably end up doing what mundano man did LOL!!
That's one he'll of a sentence... markswebpages said:

Driving like a twunt to the end of the lane is silly. All that causes is people braking sharply, causing a chain reaction and therefore longer queues.Personally I'm not bothered either way about letting people into my lane at any point as long as it doesn't cause me to have to take action to avoid them trying forcing their way in at the last possible moment, if someone makes their intention clear and I am able to do so I'm quite happy to try and create a gap by adjusting my speed and road position.

Matching your speed with other traffic and merging in turn well before the obstruction appears would be the sensible bet.
I blame poor signing for this attitude. When the Brynglas tunnels were shut, the gantry signs were telling people to abandon lane 3 1500 yards before the contraflow.
I understand that the traffic all has to go through one place and using three lanes prior to this won't make any difference, but my issue is that with a longer queue it leads to problems further down the road when junctions start to become blocked.

Why thank you, 9000+ miles of motorway driving in 6 weeks means I've hit quite a few coned off lanes and seen quite a few peen type actions from 'your lot' to know that they cause more accidents than merging correctly at the merge point (y'know, where it says "MERGE IN TURN" in big black letters on the yellow signage).
I've driven past quite a few rear end shunts when 'your lot' try to close up the gap to block others from getting in, only to whack the car in front.
If anything, it's 'your lot' who cause the holdups in roadworks, not the drivers using the outer lane like they're meant to, to get to the merge point correctly!
I in your general direction
So why do they put up the signs, lane closed in 800, 600, 400, 200 yards? Is this for people to ignore and flog on until they run out of lane? Or is it a bit of a clue??? ie. 'you might want to think about moving out of this lane now as it will shortly be comming to an end'!!I've driven past quite a few rear end shunts when 'your lot' try to close up the gap to block others from getting in, only to whack the car in front.

I pitty your self importance......
What happens when you try to merge at the 600 marker only to find some blocking your move because he thinks the 800 markeris the point at beyond which behaviour becomes self importance, or the point two miled back down the road when he heard about the closure on the traffic news, or just makes up some other random reason to get upset that someone dares pass them while they're in a queue?
There's no reason to stop and fight at the cones. If everyone can zip merge while moving at the 600 yard marker, everyone can zip merge while moving as they come to the cones. The reason that doesn't happen is because of people in the open lanes not allowing room for people in the closing lanes to merge.
If you want harmonious, predictable driving on our highways, then do what the highway code says. At the moment you're making up your own rules, then trying to obstruct others who aren't complying with the rule you just made up! Don't be an idiot.

Accident in the M1 yesterday. Outside overtaking lane closed. Man in the mondeo pulls out and straddles both lanes. Smart aleck in BMW who was screaming down the now empty lane brakes behind him.
A lovely example of modern motorway driving in the British Isles.

Top work by the 4x4 (X5?) there!Mondeo man upset because BMW man worked a bit harder at school than he did and wants to have a bit of power of him for ten minutes.
Seriously though, what a dick! I've had people do this to me before and all it does is cause even more congestion further back. I brake, the person behind brakes, we all come to a complete stop and have to merge in 500 yards earlier than necessary just because this knob decides he's in charge that day. I would be interested to know the legalities in this, surely blocking a lane on purpose is an offence?
Guaranteed this will be a MLM when the traffic clears up.
Ah well at least we all know his numberplate now and can ensure we are ready for his antics!
