Some Turbo Engines do I agree but the specific engine in the B5 was awesome. It had massive boost and a good kick but also had a good feel of an NA engine.
Cosworth magic in that engine though wasn't there?

People would be queueing around the block to buy a £40k 197bhp 3 series.

I don't really like NA engines as much, I had an M6 with the V10 and it was brutal on accelration but no where near as much fun as the power delivery of the B5 and the same applied to the V8 engine in the B7 I had.

Horses for courses.
More boost means a bigger turbo which in turn means much more lag whilst it gets up to speed... Far from the feel of a good NA engine...

Every engine is different, some V8's have a kind of second wind at around 3500rpm and almost feel like a turbo charge or other forced induction. As I said, unless you've driven the B5 you simply wouldn't know what I'm on about.

I think BMW should be more interested in patenting their "mastering of sales tactics", purely by sticking a Mini badge on the front of a pig and calling it a Mini Countryman.

Yes Cosworth breathed on it and transformed it from about 250bhp to 380bhp as standard using their cylinder heads and enlarged intakes. The standard car has a nice amount of boost and does have a V6 NA feel to it but when remapped they produce crazy boost from the K04 turbo's and defo feel more like a Turbo nutter machine.

Do love the signiture BMW flat 6's.

But v6 twin turbo hasn't really hurt the GT-R much.

And at least, BMW will be easily tunable. biggrin

If a V6 was going to go anywhere, id imagine it'd more than likely go into the X5/6 SUVs?
If that's the case, then I wouldn't mind. However, as modular engine designs become more popular, I can't imagine BMW producing a V6 and an I6, it just wouldn't make financial sense.

If they ditch the I6 for a V6 entirely, I only have one thing to say:

NOOOOOOOO00000000000ooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! [/luke skywalker mode]

Never knew BMW made a flat 6. Are you sure you're not confusing them with a certain other German manufacturer?

BMW doesn't do a flat 6.

Not to sure on that. The old M104 wasn't light and was tad heavier iirc than the previous M103 (great engine and could really do the miles). I found the 2.4 & 2.6 V6's to be very sweet and the E320 V6 handled very well.

I had a whizz in a Merc twin turbo 3.2 V6, some years ago, and if BMW can match that, we'd all be mightily impressed. It was an AMG lump in what appeared, at first to be a dreary E220, until you saw the wheels,-about 12" wide. It was shatteringly fast, with both anchors and handling world class. At £44K I had to say,'I'll think about it' but if YOU get the chance of a joyride, take it, you will be amazed. Seems that BM have indeed applied for both V6 and V8 patents, several years after Merc showed 'em the way.

Intresting

2 exhaust turbines on the right hand bank turbo on the V6.

YEah i noticed that. I would guse thats a twin scroll turbo. The second trubo would really need to be as its a sequentical setup so lag shouldn't be a problem.

Chris.
If i remember correctly the best number of cylinders to have for a turbo is 3 as the pulses from the exhaust match the opening of the inlet valves. So if you have 3 exhausts feeding each exhaust turbine then you have lots of lovely pulses.

I think the V6 will be excellent.

I wish they would be brave enough to try a power turbine in the exhaust it would probably be mega lag but once you get it blowing it would produce silly power and silly efficiency
