I remember when fuel was so cheap you could release the trigger on the right amount. Lets face it a one second squeeze is about a quid now. In fact the triggers used to have a lock on them so you could lock the trigger and leave it running, the clips are still on pumps although part of the catch has been removed so dopes do not to leave the thing to fill while they muck about subsequently allowing it to overflow.

So what happens if you type 50 quid and it doesn't fit?
I wondered the same.
Concerning the desire to go beyond the 99p I would assume that a reasonable percentage of us have loyalty cards so want the full quid for the point

Im sorry but i KNOW the pumps are fixed as i stopped at 19.99 and held the nozzle from the pump for a moment before putting it back, it stayed at 19.99, soon as the nozzle was put back it went to 20.01.

Explain that.

Well, what can I say - just put £25 in this morning at a local Texaco, without being under or over.
Put same or £30 in at Tesco off the North Circular, and £12 at a Total at Tamworth Services.
That would seem to suggest pumps on the mainland are no different from Northern Ireland's, and likewise in the South, when putting €xx .
Heck, I'd no issue putting .xx cents in too, to get rid of them - so I really can't appreciate how others are struggling to put in a round amount.
The op & I are saying that we never used to struggle, the same as you, but after recent refurbes at local service stations it now seems impossible to stop at .00. We're not saying that we have never been able to operate a simple fuel pump to get the amount of fuel we wanted.

Don't they have a penny jar that you can take one out of ?
Eveyone on PH talks about these but I've never seen one!
I have seen them in a few places but I always use a card so never needed to use them.

Sometimes i manage to keep the handle held down, release it at the right time and it stops bang on the £40.00 mark. If i run over by 10p or whatever, i just stop it there and leave it.

But when i hit it right on the exact number, i feel like such a boss.

I want to flex on the forcourt and give the cashier a big high five.

Money? Cash? Coins?
What's wrong with a good old-fashioned debit or credit card?

I don't remember the last time I used cash to pay for fuel.
I use a card to pay for most things, the MONEY BAG is just for car parks. I tried one of those phone-to-pay-for-parking things once and by the time i'd finished my time had elapsed.

Do peoples actually fill to a 'value' ? (i.e. £20) rather than just fill to the Brim ? Why ?
I always assume theres no point in carrying an extra 50 litres of fuel around in the car for no real reason.

Why ?

It doesn't go 'off'.
It is always needed.
It will cost more (normally) tomorrow.

And umm. Less hassle?

Seriously ? Why?
Is it the weight ? 35kg is hardly going to make a sodding difference.
Oh come off it, there's lots of reasons why. First reason that comes to mind is everyone's not a company director & probably have to live to a budget & by the end of the week or month while waiting for their next pay cheque they may not have £100/£150 to fill up, £20 could well last them until pay day. We don't all have an endless supply of cash.

Personally when I used to drive for a living I always used to fill up, but now I don't bother. I get my milk & fags in my local services so I'm normally in there on a daily bases anyway, also it depends on how much cash I've got in my pocket at the time I need fuel.

Here's my solution;

Go to 'pay-at-pump' pump.
Swipe card.
Fill car/shed with petrol/diesel.
Click.
Put nozzle back.
Drive off.

The pump measures how many litres you are putting in the tank, NOT how many pennies.
Well thats a policy which frankly needs reviewing.
Why? you're there to buy litres!

Or fill up on pay day - and it sees you through ?

Not enough disposable to fill the car, but can buy £5 of fags a day ?
Does not compute.

Not judging, just saying.
But how do you know it sees people through, £20 may see them through but then for what ever reason they do more miles than usual.

I didn't say I didn't have enough disposable. I said, it depends on how much cash I've got in my pocket at the time I need fuel.

I am also not judging but it seems you're far more organised than the rest of us mere mortals. smile

A full tank will last everyone on a salary a full month?

I always pay by credit card as I get cashback so if I'm only a few days from my statement date I'll put £20 in as I'd rather have that £30/40 in my pocket for an extra month.

I always fill the daily driver to the brim so I can maximise the time I'm not stood about in a petrol station with a bunch of idio- er, the general public.
Plus I like to occasionally check the MPG of the odd tank, keep tabs on the car's health.

Get it to land on XX.69 and if it is a fit chick see if you can fit 69 into the sentence.

I am easily amused.

That was the point of the original post! I do about 40,000 miles a year between 4 cars and normally fill the tank when I go to the local garage. On the odd occasion I would just stick £20 or £30 in, and since the garage has been re-fitted it appears it is impossible to finish on £xx.00? So much so I started trying to get every multiple of £10 to finish on £xx.00 out of curiosity, and it always went up to £xx.01, which led me to ask - are we being diddled by the petrol companies?

An extra penny per car per visit could be netting the petrol stations millions of ££££'s a year extra. All they have to do is calibrate the pumps to read up by a penny.......
