It's a shame you can't watch the great rally cars of
the past competing in the UK,but you can in San Marino..

I remember seeing Mr Pond nearly cutting the SD1 in half against a tree in front of me on a stage at Knowlesley Safari Park, Lombard RAC, cMid '80s. Watching it on the highlights that evening, from in-car, Co driver Rob Arthur calmly undid his seatbelts and said "Alright, let's get out and have a look".

Many years ago I attended the scene of a single vehicle RTA - car involved was a Rover SD1 that had wrapped it self round a large tree on a corner in the middle of a small village (sharp bend) the front bumper was almost touching the rear bumper - car was destroyed - both doors on the drivers side wide open and driver seat almost outside the car - I initialy thought it was stolen and occupants had legged it till I asked the growing crowd if anyone saw what happened - well dressed gentry type chap said "saw it no but I was driving it" not a scratch on him - he didn't remember anything about the accident just getting up from the floor beside the car. Lucky chap I reckon

Thank you. Happy memories indeed. For me, that is, not Tony Pond.

Why can't rallying be like that any more?
That's exactly what I think, every time I see an old World of Sport BHP production like this, and each time I come back from watching the Roger Albert Clark rally.

Maybe copy the super touring formula but with a twist.

Space frames, bhp/ton limits to keep things sensible, rwd, na given legislative advantage to encourage screamers!!!

Should keep budgets half sensible and running repairs affordable

That is fantastic coverage.

The way that you can see that the drivers are having to fight with the now primitive cars to keep them on the road makes it all the more impressive.

Could have been somewhat of an exageration, but the period Grandstand (or was it world of sport - cant remember - I was 8) mentioned that Pond lost time during the later stages of the first and second day as the power steering fluid was overheating....!

Now that would have made things a little, hmmm, exciting. Flying across the faster sections of Tholt Y Wil when the power steering drops out.

I went to this rally and the 1986 event. First year we went over in a MK2 Escort Sport, second year a Mk2 RS2000 (some pattern somewhere?) I met Tony Pond at the service point and got my pic taken with him - a genuine decent guy and he had time for a quick chat.

I also met Jim McRae at the same point who was equally accommodating. This used to have the 'Rally Show' held at the Palace Lido where the drivers would hold court. Great times.

My Dad took me to an early 80s (possibly 1980 or 1981) RAC Rally stage at Knowsley Safari Park. All I remember is cars roaring past v3ery noisily. Good stuff.

Yes, that's the thing.

There does need to be an endurance element to rallying too.
Like the 48hr long sections they used to do.
It's what captured my imagination back in the day.
It attraction wasn't just about the 'cars with charisma'.
