It's a shame you can't watch the great rally cars of
the past competing in the UK,but you can in San Marino..

I remember seeing Mr Pond nearly cutting the SD1 in half against a tree in front of me on a stage at Knowlesley Safari Park, Lombard RAC, cMid '80s. Watching it on the highlights that evening, from in-car, Co driver Rob Arthur calmly undid his seatbelts and said "Alright, let's get out and have a look".

Thank you. Happy memories indeed. For me, that is, not Tony Pond. ChrisJ. said:

Why can't rallying be like that any more?
That's exactly what I think, every time I see an old World of Sport BHP production like this, and each time I come back from watching the Roger Albert Clark rally.Space frames, bhp/ton limits to keep things sensible, rwd, na given legislative advantage to encourage screamers!!!
Should keep budgets half sensible and running repairs affordable

Could have been somewhat of an exageration, but the period Grandstand (or was it world of sport - cant remember - I was 8) mentioned that Pond lost time during the later stages of the first and second day as the power steering fluid was overheating....!
Now that would have made things a little, hmmm, exciting. Flying across the faster sections of Tholt Y Wil when the power steering drops out.

I went to this rally and the 1986 event. First year we went over in a MK2 Escort Sport, second year a Mk2 RS2000 (some pattern somewhere?) I met Tony Pond at the service point and got my pic taken with him - a genuine decent guy and he had time for a quick chat.
I also met Jim McRae at the same point who was equally accommodating. This used to have the 'Rally Show' held at the Palace Lido where the drivers would hold court. Great times.

Maybe copy the super touring formula but with a twist.

There does need to be an endurance element to rallying too.
Like the 48hr long sections they used to do.
It's what captured my imagination back in the day.
It attraction wasn't just about the 'cars with charisma'.
