Clutch, flywheel, brake discs and pads, thermostat, various pipes and belts, some suspension parts (some are shared with 540), filters, engine sensors....there's more but slip my mind at the moment.....

I agree with others though, there is no such thing as a cheap M5. Yes it is possible to buy one cheap and ignore issues (split bushes etc) and you could do that for a year, but if you treat them properly and maintain them fully then you will be paying for the upkeep of a once £60000 M car........from personal experience, even a low mileage late model e39 M5 will need THOUSANDS spent to keep in tip top condition. If anyone would like to come and read through my maintenance file please feel free!

They were separate options. My last E39 had the ski hatch, but fixed seats. My current one has folding seats, but no ski hatch.
Any loss of stiffness with the folding seats?

I've got E28, E34 and E39 M5's.

For me they are the best cars money can buy. They are fast, comfortable, handle reasonably well and are very well put together. They are a true jack of all trades and there is nothing not to like about them. The E28 and E34 in particular have character in spades and really feel special.

They are expensive to run though. You might get lucky if you own one for a short period but sooner or later you'll find yourself with a 2-3k bill. As long as you account for that you will not be disappointed - guaranteed.

I would say get the very best car you can afford, a cheap M5 is a false economy. Try to find an enthusiast owned example with evidence of servicing carried out on time and bills for other maintenance. Good luck with your search.

Which one is your favourite i.e. the one you would keep if you had to sell 2?

E34 if I could only keep one. I would have a very, very hard time saying goodbye to the E28 though.

Saves weight when you fold them down.

I bought Mrs PCD a 2000 X facelift car a year ago Lemans Blue 105K for under 6 grand....its needed nothing as yet, apart from a bit of oil every 1000 miles or so.....I love it, burned a Ferrari 355 off on a slip road a month or two back....one thing our car does need is a sports exhaust though, slightly too quiet for my liking. Oh and the TV no longer works due to digital switchover which is annoying

Got to be a way to fix that - does it have an external video in port?

I picked an early one up for £4100. Just needed rear tyres and brakes.
No Vanos issues, great bodywork, & immaculate interior.
Drives perfectly & looks fantastic but i'm lucky to get 18MPG
Absolute Beast and will get you into trouble very quickly if not respected!!biglaugh

I picked up a matching set of top brand part worn rear tyres (4-5mm) for £110, and new rear discs for £120 so they can be maintained without paying through the nose if you are careful.

I guess I could have been stung Big Time, but got lucky!
Great Cars if you can find a good one.

I had a quick look through the forums and couldnt find a sensibly priced way to get it working again

Hmmmm. All depends how it works and if there is any way to stick video into it I suppose. I'd bet there's a way, but it might require some knowledge of electronics and some hacking (my thinking is get a cheap freeview box that runs off 12V or less and hook it up)

An e28 M5 for £4k? yikes

Comes up as a real M5 according to Eurocarparts site, could be the V5 has been changed though.

Plenty of e28 M535s masquerade as M5's but his is apparently genuine.
And it has tax and test.
And it's £4K!!

Sorry, back to your non hand built lesser models tongue outwink

10 hours into 2012 and am already thinking of how I could buy this without the Mrs finding out? A proper, hand-built M5 for the same amount of cash as you could blow sorting out that new fangled VANOS malarky.

I'm off to see if the Mrs fancies a drive? wink

Not that I can detect.
