What mileage would you expect when buying a brand new car?

I had a hire car in spain with 42 KM on the clock. But it looked like those 42 km had been on a rally stage, because I spotted 9 dinks and scratches on the paintwork (in the dark underground carpark at malaga airport that is hire car city) The Eurocar rep seemed to think I had OCD.

Sounds about right - if you spot damage when checking out you have ocd yet when checking back in you are a reckless criminal if they spot any....
