Someone tell me this is a terrible idea

They prob don't know what it is!! But a poor advert could be an advantage to a savvy buyer! I'm guessing the mileage is astronomical too, plus... THAT interior!?!
I thought this too. 5 minutes of research shows it should be a 5.7 TPI L98 in that car. Will call the guy later and find out whats what.. now looking at the alternatives suggested above.quantum_man said:
So PaulB81, did you get the Camaro??
I'm going to go look at it on Wednesday. I have spoken to the owner quite a bit and he is a genuine enthusiast. He has done a lot with the car but doesnt have time to use it. Unless there is something wrong with it I will be getting it. Im getting the train there with a mate.Quite looking forward to it. I know the looks arent to a lot of peoples taste but I like it. I'm considering growing a nice mullet to go with the car and buying some country music.
Heres the beasty

Good stuff! Looks like a good 'un so hopefully you'll be taking it home!
Be interesting to know what you make of it.

How does it go? Im not expecting it to be fast but it should hopefully be fun. Im sure it makes the right noises which is what matters with this kind of car

Just read the notes on yours. I hope they arent all that unreliable!!

Ah I see in your garage you have the exact same car ! How do you find it? Its going to be a fun contrast to my Elise but thats the idea. Any tips on what to look out for?

Ha ha don't let mine put you off. I think mine spent a lot of its life laid up, it only had 36k on the clock when I bought it, and once pressed into regular service a few issues manifested themselves! How does it go? Like all American cars of the era bhp figures were only just starting to recover as emissions control and fuel injection technology improved. The car is really geared for off the line grunt, it's very fast from a standing start but otherwise feels a bit lazy the upper gears. The autobox is the cars main handicap, they didn't make a 5.7 with a manual sadly. The torque of that big V8 makes for a relaxing drive. They do sound good though!
Ride quality is atrocious.

Rust is your main enemy but this one doesn't appear to have suffered. Main areas are the wheel arches and the leading edge of the bonnet and around the headlamps where water can get trapped. Check underneath for damage on the sills, it's a heavy car and my IROC-Z had its stills chewed up from some dingbat jacking it up wrong.
Check for a puff of blue smoke on start up, a sign of the infamous worn valve seals. Not a show stopper but something to be aware of.
One important point is to check it's definitely a 5.7 TPI. Some cars are mis-sold because not a lot of people know what to look for and Chevrolet did have a rather bewildering range of engine and trim options over the years. You need to find the RPO code sticker, this will be located in either the centre storage console or on the lid of the little storage compartment in the boot. You basically looking for the codes to confirm that it's a 5.7 TPI which are B2L and/or L98.
Good news is that if its B2L equipped car they came standard with the G90 performance package including performance rear axle, engine oil cooler and rear disc brakes!

Ive seen the RPO code sticker. It is a genuine 5.7 and does have the performange package which should hopefully make it handle a bit better. Im expecting it to be more of a cruiser than a rocket ship. This one has 110k miles on it so its certainly been used. The current owner has replaced LOTS on the car so that should hopefully see me right. He has even had it on Santa Pod so hopefully anything that was due to explode would have done it then. Oooh I've always liked that shape Camaro. The nose especially. Thing is though, I've always thought those look better in photos than in the flesh. Whenever I've actually seen a real one it's always looked a little bit, um, sloppy, as though it's been taken to bits and not aligned very well when put back together.
Of course it's possible that everyone I've seen, and I've only seen a few, look that way because they've suffered that exact fate.
I still fancy one, and I'm envious. I hope it's as good as it looks, best of luck!

Sounds like you’ve done your homework already! ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)

The do handle fairly well but take a bit of effort to drive enthusiastically. Lack of rack and pinion steering doesn’t help! (Not putting you off am I?)

I think they came out of the factory like that! ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
The youngest examples around are getting on for 22 years old so you can't expect perfection. I think body panels do go out of alignment over time, the car is based on a monocoque design and there's a fair amount of inherent flex in the body between the front and rear subframes. This probably doesn't help, there are aftermarket sub frame connectors which supposedly address this issue, one of my long term 'wants' for the car.
Bought it ![biggrin](/inc/images/biggrin.gif)
Drove it back 3 hrs odd in busy traffic. It cut out once while sitting stationary for a while, felt like a stall. It was probably my fault for not putting in neutral. Other than that, no issues. Considering it only did 250 miles last year and I just did that in one go, Im very impressed.
