Riggers, are you absolutely sure that "the M135i uses the same Twinpower 3.0-litre turbo six as the old 1M Coupe" - TwinPower also refers to the twin scroll N55 engine that was used in the later production 135i, not just the twin-turbo N54 used in the earlier 135i and the 1M. I thought the N54 was now dead and future cars were going to be N55 based....?
Not absolutely sure, but everybody seems to be saying N54 or M54S, which I think is what they call the motor in the 1M?
Seriously doubt this will have the N54 from the 1M.

I'd put money on it being a tweeked N55 (power quoted matches the current 135i N55 with the BMWP power kit fitted)..... use of the Twinpower moniker pretty much confirms N55 as well.

An homage to the 2002 turbo; small, turbocharged, RWD, white with M graphics. This will surely be the coolest thing going for those in their early - mid 20s with some money to spend on the ultimate hot hatch.
Ford make that....
Rwd ?

People make me laugh with their obsession with LSD on road cars. It has become a tired topic of blokes who don't actually understand what it does and/or can't even drive beyond 6/10th where it actually has zero benefits anyway.

Those 1-series are very tractable without one. I am looking forward to the 125i M-Sport 3dr at around £25K. All the fun I might ever need in a car... for less than a Golf GTI !

While that maybe true in some cases........

That isn't true of the 135i, (or the 130i even) as it seriously needs a LSD, even in 'mundane' situations. BMW seriously needs to go back to it's roots, and stop this LSD for ///M only rubbish, when many cars in it's line up really need them instead of the stupid electronics fitted in instead. It wasn't that long ago, when a LSD was an option on even 'mundane' BMW models.

you can see what BMW are thinking here, Audi has their full fat RS models to compete with the M3 & M5, but also their 'S' models which are basically normal cars with faster engines like S3 S4 TTS. If you think M3 vs RS4/5, but S5 feels like it logically fits above 335i when actually they compete directly as turbo 3.0's.

Does feel like they are late to the party

Both brands have their trim levels that can apply to their boggo machines in the form of Mssport and Sline to extract a few extra £1000's out of the National Account Managers (formally known as sales reps)

Absolutely sick of people saying they drive 'a M Sport BMW' (118d) or Sline Audi (1.6 A3 tdi) so at least these will have a nod towards performance

I think Audi with the S- and RS- models are a bit diluted compared to the relative 'purity' of the BMW M series as performance cars. Not for much longer, it seems, though this rot seems to have started from the X5M and X6M.

While I understand they are a company and have to make profits, diluting the very essence of M-ness surely is like shooting the golden goose...

I'm not an expert in these things, so what do I know....

Why won't BMW offer the AWD versions in the UK?

Given Britains weather, you'd think there would be a market for an AWD BMW 1/3/5 series?
What weather? This isn't iceland!

Don't like the ;ook ond the new 1 series from the front or the back. The back end looks like a citroen or a Polo.

Like the idea od the M Performance sub brand. They have had M-Performance styling tweaks for a quite a while, so I cant see an issue with the performance enhancements.

Nice idea imo and as mentioned earlier, harks back to the era of the M535i etc.

Still think it's a genuine shame they don't make a 1M version of the current (or should that be old?) hatch limiting it only to the coupe variant.

What's the advantage that all these trick/electronic diffs afford over a good old fashioned mechanical LSD?

Cheaper for the manufacturer, is the only advantage.

Some of the advantages but lower cost, less understeer at low speed, better high speed stability, less transmission losses, higher mpg, no scrubbing reversing, reduced noise, reduced maintenance etc. Electronic diff works ok in most situations but you might have to turn it on so not there all the time at all speeds and it doesn't have the consistency of a mechanical device.

Mechanical diff is working to find better traction all the time before you even spin up a wheel, the electronics only start to work once one wheel has lost traction.

I'm 50/50 with that.
I think people need to start to get around the idea of the difference between M-Sport styling and M Power.
So what is this then?

BMW already have M sport styling and genuine M versions (M3, M5
etc), so what is this 'new' range?

I think the majority of people on here are too old to appreciate the styling, sadly for you most modern cars are designed to appeal to the current young generation not dreary old folks wink

Age has nothing to do with blindness, unless suffering from temporary wking blindness. Presumably the Anne Widdicombe is actually quite foxy thread is just around the corner?

How could anyone step out of that in front of a crowd and feel good? It may or may not drive well but for whatever money you spend, you could do pretty much as well, without the eye pain. Hell, I'd even defend the rampantly priced Golf R before I'd take that pain.
