The real point where the hosepipe came in was to stop people leaving the hose on hours on end just flung on the lawn. This was how lazy people watered their lawns. I could only imagine that banning car washing using hoses is a mere PR exercise given this discrimination.
Most certainly, how can you tell 90yr old Arthur that he can't water his garden for 8 hours, when the young whipper-snapper down the road is allowed to wash his car twice a week? The concept of water quantity used is something you can't really argue without slapping a meter on the individual tap.....

Solution: http://www.mobiwasher.co.uk/

Never going to be an issue where I live, but I did invest in this stuff http://www.chemicalguysuk.com/product_p/eco.htm for washing our campervan when on a 3-week 2500mile Euro tour last year. My OCD won't allow a dirty vehicle biggrin

I have to admit to a certain amount of jealousy reading all this. I live in a sort of maisonette perched up on the first floor with no water supply outside.

Providing I can still laborously haul buckets down the stairs a hosepipe ban won't make any difference to me at all. I might finally go out and clean one of my filthy cars just to get my own back on the jammy sods in the other houses who have hosepipe connections. hehe

Those things use vast amounts of energy to run !!!!, you really dont want to pay for water from one of these
Yup - Luckily the "Gulf" has plenty of Oil / Gas to fuel these cheaply (well cheaper than us)!

We just need a National Grid for Water ... taking it from the grim / wet north and feeding the southern rivera ..... smile

It's the use of a hosepipe that is banned, not the use of water. Use as much water as you want to clean your car, it's only the delivery mode that's an issue.

I have a similar one - http://www.nomad-direct.co.uk/index.php - more for cleaning off muddy bikes before putting them in the car but it's useful as a car washer too as I don't have access to a hosepipe.

14 litres is fine for doing a car if it's not too dirty - quick rinse, wash, rinse, dry. Just don't expect mega power from it.

Fit a few water butts around the house - free water

I use about 40-60L a day in the summer watering the veg patch and fruit trees - I've only twice ran out of water in last 2 years and since then I've added a few more - if there is hose pipe ban I can link my pressure washer to the biggest butt and wash the cars with that.

Looking forward to the pratt next door complaining to local water authority first time I do that as he certainly will assume I'm using the tap water and I'm not about to explain myself to him.

I now have 800L of rain water capacity and it saves me £50 a year that I would otherwise pay Anglian water (don't forget you pay almost twice for water from the tap - once for the water and a pecentage for treatment of waste water)

Oh and I am at 100% water capacity in preparation for the planting season (I run them all down late summer and have them empty over winter so they don't freeze as that wrecks the containers)

This quote is really fking annoying;

"The average person uses 150 litres of water a day. Water company infrastructure across England and Wales leaked 3.4billion litres a day in 2010/11 – a third of the UK's usage – according to the regulator Ofwat."

Why don't they sort their own problems first?

I live in a house with no drive so can understand your predicament. I have a watering can and some buckets. Takes ages to wash the car but it's worth it. smile

Besides it's easy enough to wash a car without a hose, just takes a bit longer.

So, apparently here in the South East we have a hosepipe ban on the way.

How do we clean our cars if we're not allowed to use the hose?

Because fixing the network would cost them money. Easier just to shaft the end user. Come on, this is Monopoly Market Fundamentals 101, keep up at the back wink

I always used to use a watering-can to wash my car when I was younger, because I couldn't be bothered with unravelling the hose. I don't think it will make any difference to how often I wash my car really.

Forget the BS about water supply. The next thing to run short will be the availability of big watering cans. I might just buy a container full from China and do some weekend door-to-door sales.
