My company contract hire Skoda VRS Estate costs £300+vat, 15000 miles pa over two years I'm amazed I could get one of these for not a huge amount more.

I would be a bit worried about the personal tax on that list price though.

Maybe it would pay to lease it as an individual. Some sums will be required when the hire period finishes.

what are the attached to the bottom grills, they look like DRLS but i assume a beemer would have leds, seems wierd they dont have fog lights though
I think they are a kind of LED driving/fog light. Havent seen my car running from the outside. Must read the manual (it is on the i-drive system!)

edo- after reading this thread I have been inspired to write a thread of my own on general gassing and have used your interior photo, I hope you don't mind.

As an aside, car looks very good in black. smile I didn't even know there was a new shape 6 series out until I read this thread.

The brochure describes them simply as; ' LED fog lights'. The DRLs are combined within the main headlight unit, angel eyes and a strip of LEDs underneath the main lights.

Had the 640d for a month or so now. It replaced a rather differently engined previous generation 6 series - a V10 M6.

The M6 was great, but the issue was not mpg, but range. PIA when I had to drive "oop north", filling it 3 times in 2 days was rather tedious. Even on a run (respectable 24mpg) it would only do 300 miles.

I dont consider the 640d to be a direct rival - of course, if I had £90k spare, I'd get the new M6. Having said that, in every day driving it is still a pretty potent machine, and I still enjoy driving it.

There is no denying it is a large car, but I think they have improved the design over the previous shape 6, most notably with the rear, which on the last car was nothing short of damn ugly.

Driving the car sees fantastic acceleration from no revs at all, making overtaking a piece of cake - The M6 was a rocket, but only if you were in the right gear. Despite being a derv, it also doesnt mind revs, and is quite happy to sail round to 5k. Whilst no V10 petrol, it makes a pretty decent noise - and certainly doesnt sound like a diesel - even at start up. Ride (firm on 20's but perfectly ok) and handling are really good for a car of this size.

Spec is pretty generous - my car is only a bog standard M Sport bar the 20 inch wheels, but still comes with Prof Media inc. Hard drive and telematics, Business Hi-Fi, elec memory heated seats, Xenons, Cruise, front and rear park, USB interface, and more besides. I do miss head-up display though!

To date, it's returning 40mpg overall after 1,000 mixed miles, and will easily top 50 at the motorway limit - this means a range of over 600 miles. Pretty amazing for a large coupe with over 300bhp, and 600+NM of torque.

As a day to day car it fits my needs perfectly. It isn't a sports car, and it doesn't pretend to be, but as a quick, comfortable, highly spec'd GT car, I think it does a great job. I would never stick my own cash into buying one, but with a great lease price on a par with cars costing half the price I think it makes a great case for its self.

A more PH weekend car will be joining it in the garage though, fear not!

Impressive mpg and a nice looking car there. I do wonder when a car company will be brave enough to fit such an engine to a smaller lighter sports car though. Something Z4 sized maybe?

I'm not a big fan of the new age BMW's.

But I LOVE that car biggrin Very Jealous, even if the list price is a little eye watering.

edo - how smooth is the engine compared to a straight 6 petrol? what about compared to the V10 in the old M6? i'm guessing at motorway speeds (or well north of) when just cruising the engine cannot be heard from inside the cabin? what sort of rpm does it do in 8th gear at 75 or so?

cheers

I'm yet another that really doesn't like BMWs, but I really like the new 6-series, a very elegant cruiser with a bit of bruiser about it!

At idle ad pottering (not under load) the engine is almost unheard.

The smoothness is not far off a petrol 6 in my humble opinion.

Car is now at 3,500 miles. MPG is still sitting at a smidge under 40mpg without effort in a mix of cruise/fun/traffic.

For a diesel (and even just generally) the engine is very happy revving and doesn't dislike revs at all.

Very happy to demo the car to anyone in Surrey. Everyone who has been in it (including some real die hard Diesel haters!) have been blown away by it.

Youtube vid (not mine) gives a little idea of the noise - if anything I'd say this doesnt do it justice for the smoothness.

Not sure.

I think thats the issue with all these cars. The tech squeezed into the 640d and similar cars is so immense that out of warranty would be a no no for me.

Looking forward to the arrival of the Tiv: No ABS, Air Bags, Traction Control or Power Steering!! Just an engine some scaffolding, leather, carpet, and some fibre-glass!

Yes, all 8 speed box. Need to check the revs, but it is very low at motorway cruise.

In Eco Pro mode, the 640d seems to sit at just a smudge under 2000rpm at just under 80 leptons.

Still got the 320D as well?

It's an impressive thing, I guess that 10 years back my E38 740i Sport would have been the car that the typical 640D buyer is now going for so, while different, the demographic is the same. Both deeply impressive machines. 20 inch rims though?
