In 2006, I paid £5k for a V8 Grand Cherokee, with a £2k LPG system already fitted... Car had done 55k miles...

It's now on £118k and has been used to tow, trailers, caravans... Been offload... I've chucked everything at itsmile

I would be amazed if I'd spent more than £2k on maintenance in the last 6 years...

The money I've saved by not buying a new, golf, focus, etc etc, paid for thissmile

Now obviously everyone has different priorities, and needs...but the point I'm trying to make is, why spend £25k on a Golf or suchlike, when you could put that money into paying the mortgage, or if your that way inclined, buying toyssmile

But obviously if everyone did what you did then there would be no 2nd hand bargains! I bought my Polo new and that cost £20k. A lot of people were surprised that I spent that on a Polo, but all rival cars were pretty much the same. New cars are expensive, it's not going to change.

I think you need a bright finish grille, silver wheels and clear rear lights to finish off your car nicely too smile

It seems that some in the UK put the reg plate above all other considerations - doesn't matter if it's a shooping trolley car, they think that because their's is newer, it makes it somehow better!
The plate thing is easy to get around thoughsmile.. I just bought a couple of cheap plates from DVLA £245 quid each...
My Aston is an 06.... But looking at the condition, it could easily be an 09 or a 10, the plate hides the age well...
Same for the Jeep, it's a 99, the shape changed in 05 so again it could be an 05.. Not that it matters, as even a brand new car is only brand new for the first day you own ithehe

Fortunately, not everyone does what I do.smile

It seems there are loads of idiots out there with more money than sense, that are happy to spend £20k on a Polo, that I could, later on pay £5k for as a run around for the wifehehe

Oh and I don't agree about the price of new cars not changing..... If people refused to pay for them, the manufacturers would soon review the prices....

And silver wheels are so yesterday, clear lights are for Chavs, and bright grills are for rappers who like bling innithehehehe

New car prices are crazy....I actually don't know one single person, who has bought a new car in the last 10 years...
Too true, neighbour has just priced up a Inignia sri bi-turbo,195bhp diesel. He apparently specced it with leather and a dab stereo. 31K. 31k for a bleedin Insignia ffs. Told him to buy it then i`d give him the 15k it will be worth in 12 months.

There are currently 934 insignias on PH... Starting at less than £7k and going up from there....

Obviously we all have differents needs and wants..... But if I had a mortgage, or big debts, I'd buy somthing decent for half of the £31k, and pay the rest off the mortgage....

Did you tell your neighbour what colour you preferhehehehe

There must be a bit of "DFS" syndrome where the headline price is huge to make the deal look better. The cheap lease deals on BMW 640ds suggest that the £67k list price on those is way over the top.

Out of interest how much discount is possible on something like a new 911S? That's now an 80k car but the 911 has a huge margin on it (I believe it's the most profitable mainstream car on sale).
Porsche dealers can't discount new 911s but they can offer good px deals. I.e the discount is given but as a very good price for your px instead

If buying something like an Insignia I think I'd be looking at the £7K examples. My experience with Vauxhalls tells me it will be boring but utterly reliable so worth it as "white goods" but never desirable.

31,000 is just stupid and I reckon he'll be lucky to get 15 for it in a year's time.

Insane. Buy a tidy 7k example and a E46 M3 for 10 grand as a weekend car. All you ever need and no need to envy any man.

Your right there... My mate has just sold his 94 cavalier CDi... 250,000 miles on the clock..original clutch and has broken down once since he got it off his dad... It doesn't even use any oil...

Sold to a lad down the road who needed a cheap car to get to his new job... £50 quid... He's chuffed to bits with ithehe
Be interesting to see if it makes 300k..

They cost £10k insignia £31k the insignia will lose £8k per year
Someone doing 15k a year at 18mpg and £1.43 per ltr would spend c£5.4k per year in fuel while this diesel doing say 50mpg at £1.48 per ltr would spend c£2k so £3.4k per year more in fuel but as the insignia loses £8k you would still be over £4k per year better off.

Recommended budget for running the RS6 is £2k per year do really it is viable

New car prices are high, my 520d listed at 41k discounted to 37k, same specced 530d would have been the wrong side of 50k (list) the 640d at 67k before options is silly money IMHO, even a 320d with nav and bit and bobs is nudging 35k

Then you look at the lease deals like the recent 640d m sport one and think you'd be crazy to buy out right rather than lease, seems they want to push people down that route.

As far as the new 991 is concerned I've been told no discounts are on offer and p/x are very skinny (seem to be selling them though) as a comparison I got 10% off my 997 in 2009 same spec 991 today is 88k Vs. the 70k I paid (net of discount).

If you want a new car the lease it but don't be choosey as that gets expensive if it's not a funded deal.

In other news, you can get a really expensive jacket for a fraction of the price in the charity shop if you wait a few years, and some really nice food that's only just out of date by rummaging through the supermarket bins.

Yes, (very well) used stuff is a lot cheaper than buying new. Some people don't want a £7k Insignia that's had 100k miles of fat photocopier salesman's sweat soaked into the drivers seat.

I take it that you think a brand new 1.6 diesel focus at over £20k brand new, offers value for money then??
smile

I have a slightly different view, and for the life of me, I can't understand why a basic car like that costs as much as it does.confused
