Discs, decamber, DCOEs and Dremel...
I'm sure you can make them fast if you spend enough money, I was asking if they really need all that just to 'worry' a hatchback that takes 12-13 seconds to hit 60mph.EDLT said:

Yup, you're getting old. The OP wants an interesting car that he can both drive an tinker with, an Imp is near perfect and it will teach him far more about the art of motoring precisely because it has (slightly flawed) character.

ok ive naroowed it down not the most votes win,
Hillman Imp
VW Beetle
Vauxhall Viva
Mini
Good grief. Real dynosaurs. Glad it's not my money... Hillman Imp
VW Beetle
Vauxhall Viva
Mini
my thoughts
Hillman, rare car, what is the parts supply like?
Beetle, dont get the appeal but I have never tried one! Lots of cars to choose from (if rather pricey) excelent parts supply.
Viva, possibly a bit of a bargain, easy to work on but getting bits wont be easy, Vauxhall dont support older product and the fan base isnt there to cover.
Mini, awesome fun, good parts supply, a bugger to work on and getting pricey to purchase.

yer the imp is what my dad suggest because it a mini with the engine in the back basically, parts are resonably good to come across,my thoughts

cheers guys just got quoted on some of them
viva- £2040 - 1.2
cheers guys keep thinking ideally i have no more than 4k to spend on the lot so thats 2k for the car and 2k on the insurance, i like old cars so thats what i would preffer and newer polo's etc... over 3k insurance.
does this sound ok to you guys???
First car I ever drove was a blue 1.3 (Saturday Night) Viva. That was rusting away back in '89. Great memories though, especially the bouncy seats. viva- £2040 - 1.2

My first car was a Viva. Best of luck trying to find one, because mine visibly rusted away as I looked at it. Painfully slow, as well.
I've owned a Beetle, an Imp and a Mini. The Imp was a hugely modified rally car and was also hugely unreliable. The Mini was standard and also hugely unreliable. The Beetle was ultra-slow but very reliable and taught me loads about oversteer. My preference would be for a 1303 beetle, which has the strut front suspension and semi-trailing arms on the rear (the rear end was the basis for the Porsche 944 suspension). It handles much better than the swing axle normal beetle and can be bought more cheaply, too. Parts are easy to find and cheap and they are easy to work on.
