Awful in every possible way.
Have to say I agree. Drove a std turbo, automatic and it was BAD. One of my worst ever drives, and I've driven some sheds. Put me off them for life.I think you might be getting confused.com with the models.
This think looks hilarious, as somebody else said, it would be top fun to find a set of original steel rims and put a national trust sticker in the back window, maybe fit a tow at and a caravan club sticker too?
I like the 340/360 ugly duck image
Thesse two are really cool aswell,, cool looks, one n/a and one boosted.

Mr AB Car Pix, I salute you. Like minded 'middle finger to the Johnny Normal and the rest of the World' people like you sir are the reason I come here again and again and feel as though I am amongst my own.
For the haters that dont like, or dont understand, this car, try logging on to Autocar or some other dreary yawn site.
I fookin love this, has put a smile on my face before I have even left the house, quite an achievement for a Weds morning.
Well done sir, keep 'em coming

Had the standard 360GLT with 2.0 inj as my first car about 10 years ago- a 3dr in patchy metallic grey- many happy memories. Ended up stripping out the interior in the hope of making it faster and respraying it in my parents garden with 19 cans of poundland mattblack spray paint. I then delieverd pizzas in it. Used to tell myself that customers were so impressed with it that they gave me extra tips but looking back that probably wasn't the case.
Left it in the garden when I went to uni and the interior went mouldy- still miss it though- epic car!

I know the majority don't get cars like this.... but it does make me happy when people do get it!
Road legal retro cars modified for drift spec, pretty much as good a it gets in my eyes!
Here's an old thread on the 360 (which I didn't update very much!), plenty of amusing drift pics in it though!

Back in 1984, Dad bought a new 1.4 340GL to replace an ageing and very rusty Renault 16. I was too young to drive it on the road, but was allowed to drive it around the mildly large drive (just about hooking 4th if I was quick enough, for reference) and turning it around in one of the fields we had.
2 years later, that was replaced with a new, white 360GLT hatch. Pretty much by then I was road legal and was handed the keys on many occasions to run errands around the Kent countryside, such as taking the car into the dealer for a service, running to the village garage to fill up petrol containers for mowers and that kind of thing.
But I was 17 and with the keys to a hot-hatch. And I tried very hard not to be sensible. So I drove it at very, very silly speeds that I shudder at now when I think about it. Yet it always felt safe and predictable. Or maybe that was the innocence of a young driver and a fast-looking car? But it was best on wet / damp days when I discovered it would gently and progressively powerslide out of a roundabout in Ashford onto a short dual carriageawy. And then it would do the same on any wet roundabout I found after that.
Great fun back then! Stupid, (very) irresponsible and not clever. But still great fun!

Must agree with you on that model, very poor.
I had to work on them from brand new, what a mess !
The appeal is all about the sleeper factor. They'll outrun something VAG with a 2.0 TDI 170 once they have about 150bhp, so this will waste one. Give the turbo lump a fettle, and properly quick metal will be in trouble. I know of a 16v Turbo swapped example that the local Evo drivers refused to race any more.
A lot drive badly now, because the suspension is original and screwed, but a well sorted original one (especially a GLT with proper tyres) drives well, and there are various upgrade options available if you wanna go racing. It doesn't help that the few aftermarket suspension upgrade bits available aren't cheap, so they tend to get bodged. One with sagged springs, blown shocks and 155-wide ditchfinders is bound to be scary, but that's hardly a fair test. Parts supply is an issue, sadly.
Look at it another way...they're very, very similar mechanically to a mk1/mk2 Escort, but with better weight distribution, without the scene tax, and with a YBT-killer engine swap available as a bolt-in. And a terminal image problem
cheers

My Dad had a really early one of those back in the day with the Daf (or duff) Variomatic gearbox. It was a really nasty yellow with brown cord trim! It was written off much to my fathers delight when he got out to buy some fags at a petrol station, left it running and it actually slipped into gear! This resulted in lots of techs from Volvo inspecting it and a very heavy discount from Volvo on a 245 GLE (hush money my dad called it), he was well chuffed.
Think the 340 range was one of the few car ranges that was almost completely re-engineered during it's life but still had the same overall body, the only other one I can think of off hand is the Triumph Toledo.
Anyway I like it, must be a blast.

I had two successive 360 GLTs as company cars when they were nearly new (80's I think).
They were chosen in part because you could fit an A0 plotter in the back, and had electric windows and aircon - not yet standard on base models in those days.
Incredibly predictable handling, once you got past the initial understeer, plus reasonable power from the old 2 litre injection motor - I quite enjoyed them. Manual rack & pinion steering helped.
And boy could you slide them on gravel...
re the cart spring thing - they had a single tapered rear leaf on each side, so a trifle more sophisticated than most leaf sprung rear ends; they sag over time, but can be reset.

There's nothing wrong with a boosted slidy brick. The tartan blankets a nice touch. Need to wear a white wig and a flat cap while driving it. Drive like a grandad around town then as soon as you get your german execs up your arse join the first open roundabout sideways..... Giggles aplenty.
