There's some truth in both - although rust is often included which Toyotas do just as badly but doesn't matter in Africa!! - but the real reason Toyota beat Land Rover is more likely down to their attitude to parts.
I recall reading somewhere that supply was tight in the period concerned as solihull could not meet demand and there was no money for expansion; waiting lists literally forced customers elsewhere, and once seated in japanese iron they found it had other benefits so once lost the customers didn't come back.hidetheelephants said:

The basic concept is excellent, if only another company than Land Rover actually built them.

I would buy a 70 new now at JDM prices to replace my HDJ80 Landcruiser, in terms of long term ownership a proper Landcruiser is probably the cheapest vehicle you can own bar none.
If Toyota woke up & noticed the Defender is out production soon, they'd spot a gaping hole in the commercial 4x4 truck market. Farmers & those who tow really don't like buying defenders but there is little else to compare, it's that or pickup trucks.

I can walk into the local Toyota dealer and buy one for just a bit over $22,000 (with winch and snorkel as standard )...but then I'm not if I'd ever be able to register it back in Europe
Local Toyota Dealer
The usual solution is to buy a snotter or the V5 and chassis plates of a UK registered model and drive around on those plates.Local Toyota Dealer
Illegal but a victimless crime.

I'm sure Toyota is well aware of the Defender's imminent demise, but there's a lot of US iron in the next size up 4x4.I would buy a 70 new now at JDM prices to replace my HDJ80 Landcruiser, in terms of long term ownership a proper Landcruiser is probably the cheapest vehicle you can own bar none.

I expect Toyota may release a US only maxi-cruser to test the water.
