Being overtaken...
Discussion
I've had one person admit that they do this and I've been told by another that their partner does it.
One was proud of the fact and said he did it to prove his old Xantia diesel wasn't as slow as people thought, he couldn't get his head round why I thought it was stupid and reckless.
The other was the boyfriend of one of my colleagues who she said did it all the time on the local back roads for a laugh! She was a little shocked at my angry reaction, saying that it doesn't hurt anyone! Safe to say I explained how it could possible hurt lots of people.
Both of these clowns were in their early 20's
As many have said a fast car helps, but having people being accommodating is even better.
The whole 'Your not queue jumping me!' behavior damn near got me killed once, I was overtaking a long queue of traffic doing 35-40 and slightly misjudged my accelerative ability (Primera GT with lots of gear for a holiday) thought I would pull back into the traffic after passing about 4 cars, to find they'd all bunched up and wouldn't let me in. I had a van bearing down on me and a car and motorhome to pass, I just had to go for it. Obviously I made it, but it was incredibly close.
I admit there was a lack of judgement on my behalf, but it would have been safer if the people in the queue had left room. The whole incident has completely affected my behavior on the roads and I definitely take fewer chances when overtaking as I know I cannot rely on my fellow road users.

Another well known fact.
What I find amusing is that so many other car users out there obviously think because their car is German, Japanese or what have you, it is much faster than my Rover or MG. WRONG!
Yes, very wrong. Never tire of demonstrating that when shaping up for safe overtake and they put their foot down as I do so. Like the driver of the new Mercedes Diesel who actually moved over to the nearside lane with the tell tale plumes of black stuff emerging from the exhaust pipes dead giveaway. Soon ever smaller in my rear view. Similarly, driver of X5 of Monster Truck proportions ( do they vary in size? ) tried to perform the same move over and floor it stroke. However did need to use all revs and boost to see that monster ever smaller in my rear views....
Plus, no Rover passes me. I drive German so you wont see me in the slow lane ever. Lot of that about.
Lesser known fact :~
Well, at my age helps top pass the time.

But X5's are not exactly quick are they? Another well known fact.

Its quiet satisfying on a litre bike , by the time the idiots have found the flash stalk I have vanished and I know dam well they are flashing bewildered on coming traffic .
I guess a Bugatti Veyron might have the same effect
This. Having the feeling that the majority of traffic doesn't stand a chance is nice.I guess a Bugatti Veyron might have the same effect
Have watched people do it to me several times!
I make a point of doing my utmost to ensure my driving causes no one to change speed, direction or 'surprise' them...yet when I perform a perfectly legal & safe manoeuvre I watch them try and keep up with me. I have given up getting annoyed at it & these days it just leaves me feeling a bit dismayed at their attitude & total ignorance of the situation.
When I get over taken I make a distinct point to tap the brake/pull left slightly just to ensure the overtaker is well clear, i couldnt live with myself if I purposefully drove someone into a head on collision.

I'm used to a faster car, but I can overtake effectively in our X5 on B roads and motorways. It's not exactly slow.- Edit to add, this is assuming bog standard 3.0 diesel of course, not a 4-litre twin-turbo V8

I don't doubt they're capable enough, but just not something to brag about being able to leave behind.
We had a 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8, but it was stolen. Now stuck with a lowly twin turbo diesel 4 litre 6. It's not actually that much slower in the real world. The size, brakes and handling slow it down for me more than absolute power. - Edit to add, this is assuming bog standard 3.0 diesel of course, not a 4-litre twin-turbo V8

Many many years back I had a visit at home from 2 of her majesties finest following a complaint from a fellow motorist.
My heinous crime was to have overtaken 3 cars in one go which were doing 40 to 45 on a straight section of NSL road, sun shining dry.
My mistake it seems was that when I passed the final car I gave him the bird as he flashed me several times accompanied by much arm waving.
Now I admit that perhaps I shouldn't have reacted with an apparently threatening/abusive gesture but as was agreed by said officers there was nothing wrong with my manouevre except the other driver didn't like me overtaking.
It was more of a shame that as a complaint was made they had to waste their time coming and talking to me about a standard bit of motoring practice.
They did also say that even when driving around in a fully marked up patrol car they will still get people flashing them for having the audacity to overtake them.
It is a shame that more motorists can't appreciate that when driving that is what they are supposed to concentrate on DRIVING, not their passenger, the bunnies in the fields or their shopping lists etc.

I also have an X5 40d and, whilst I wouldn't refer to it as 'fast', its capable of outpacing most 'mainstream' cars. 0-60 in 6s or thereabouts. I certainly get more headlight flashes from 'the overtaken' than I do when driving other vehicles [in otherwise exactly the same manner].

my outlaws think that any one who overtakes is a MANIAC - lots of seat gripping and gasping when i over take a honda Jazz with ease doing 55 when the Jazz is doing 40
The other one is the cackling about how FAST i drive when joining a motorway - what they forget is im just increasing speed to match the motorway traffic, and to them it feels fast because i have a reasonably quick car
They think their get to the end of the slip road doing 35-40ish is much safer

You need to catch these sts off guard if no one is behind i'll opt for no indicate and get close as I can just before it becomes a 'boy racer overtake' they usually don't have a chance to react apart from some angry beeping or flashing.
I find this works well for the pent up mpv dads although the few miles of them following you on your bumper can get tedious.
