Still needs an LSD
Unlike years gone by, BMW seem to think that no enthusiasts buy the M-Sport models any more and will therefore not benefit from the extra traction and control that an LSD provides. I assume BMWs theory is that those people should buy the M2 instead. Useless trivia: I once sold a 328i Sport that came with an LSD from the factory for around the same amount of money as BMW now charge for an LSD to fit the M135i.
I've had mine for nearly 2 years now and the biggest problem I'm faced with is what to replace it with.
Does 31 mpg pretty much everywhere (around town, 31mpg. Driving to the alps to go skiing, 31mpg. 60 mile A-road and city commute, 31 mpg.) It's fast, comfortable and sounds decent.
Just moved house from a 2 bed flat to a 4 bed and aside from hiring a van to move the furniture, everything else went in the car over about 5 trips with the back seats down, so it's surprisingly big inside too. It's pretty subtle, doesn't look too different to a 116 m-sport to the untrained eye, and sounds pretty good.
Drawbacks? The standard stereo's crap and since I updated my iphone, I can't play music through the idrive and in Manchester, almost everyone in a white Audi or A-Class wants to race you from every set of lights, which becomes tiring after a while.
What to replace it with that does circa 30mpg, costs between £400 and £500/month and can carry a dog in the boot?

A brief analysis of the new engine: http://blogs.youwheel.com/2015/06/12/brief-analysi...
Here's a topic where tuners discuss remapping the engine: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375...
Since the M140i and 340i will share the same engine, I did a bit of research and found that their stock B58 340i did 330hp/460 Nm at the wheels compared to the old N55 engine which had 291hp/420 Nm on the same dyno.
A remap brought it to 390hp/510 Nm with regular gas.
With a remap + E30 fuel it is virtually identical to the stock M3/M4 engine.
Mind you those horsepower numbers are measured at the wheels, add at least 15% for comparable manufacturer ratings.
So it looks like these cars will have 375 bhp stock and 445 bhp remapped.
Only in the USA.....where they love the wildly optimistic figures of Dynojet RR's Here's a topic where tuners discuss remapping the engine: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375...

Take those 'at wheels' figures with a massive pinch of salt.
Great info in that technical document, lots of cool engineering and technology to move it on from the N series engine.
It does seem like a lot of power for a little car that's not got the M2's chassis enhancements, but then bravo for them making it. Just like early hot hatches that were overpowered versions of regular cars, this car must have a similar feel at times.
Unusable power 99% of the time- I don't agree really. A powerful engine is more potent at any engine speed, not just at peak output. All those little squirts out of roundabouts and junctions, or overtakes etc can be deployed with a bigger grin. The torque driven pickup from 30mph in 4th will be even stronger than it was, and it will feel more fun for it. Cars like this shouldn't be stuck in London all the time, their owners will likely have some enthusiasm to take them out to the country for a blast now and then...

Anybody know if we're getting xDrive over here? With manual?!

This is the graph which shows power\torque for the new B58 engine in these cars and shows perfectly why I really struggle to get on with modern turbo engines.
I also found it interesting that around 1,000 rpm the new engine makes less torque, but apparently more horsepower. Some impressive graph work from BMW there.nickfrog said:

440i GC or 340i Touring shirley?
The £9k discount on the 340i is tempting. Brings it down to M135i money.court said:

That would make a nice upgrade from our 5dr M135i without the need to get an estate. Count me as another M135i owner who doesn't get why BMW hasn't updated the wheel design, which has always been iffy.

Apart from the naming strategy, what I'd actually like to see from BMW is some choice in the engine map: wouldn't it be cool to have a 3.0T that revs out beyond 5000rpm to 7.5 or so, with peak power at the top end (instead of those flat curves)? If nothing else, it could be part of a Performance Pack option, along with an LSD, and a BBK. Come to think of it, it would also be nice to get a choice of gearbox ratios and maps, for blips on the downshift, and pops and bangs, and no auto upshifts.
Still, I'm excited about these 1ers as I like small cars, they look better than ever, and a hatch with a straight six has got to be a good thing.

Another triumph for the bemusing naming convention I see.
I suggest a system attached to power output now, seeing as it no longer has anything to do with the engine size.
So welcome along to the 1-340 and 2-340! Least the numbers would mean something again....
It already is to an extent, it's based on 'equivalent' engine size so is based on engine size/power output. Blame the turbos.I suggest a system attached to power output now, seeing as it no longer has anything to do with the engine size.

500 bhp with a remap and E30 fuel in a RWD shopping trolley. No LSD in sight.
I thought the m3/m4s were making more like 430 horses at the wheel as per various dyno runs i have seen online (e.g. jalopnik)Here's a topic where tuners discuss remapping the engine: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375...
