bradford, dump of a city, full of nice cars.

That said, a guy i used to work with has a dingy one bedroom flat above a shop in a less salubrious part of town. He's lived there since the 90s, owns it outright now and has a string of nice cars parked outside (currently GT3 i think). he's quite a minimalist guy, see's his house as somewhere to eat, sleep and shower and enjoys spending his money on cars and holidays instead.
Seems a sensible chap. Actually enjoying his life rather than being married.
Fixed that for you hehe

You can always sleep in your car, but you can't race your house.

Hilarious how some people plough money into a depreciating asset like a car, but won't put a penny into a decent appreciating asset like a house. Still who am I to tell folk what to do with Their paper.

And not exactly super cars but it does amuse me how on many council estates you'll always see many flash Mercs, audis bimmers Porsches etc.
What a narrow view of life. Maybe some people - myself included - live in a modest house precisely because they want to plough their money into a depreciating asset. At the end of the day all property rises to an extent over time, and it's not like you could take either with you anyway...

I think I am well qualified to post on this thread. I live in a 3 storey terraced town house on the Surrey Sussex border. I bought the house when I got married in 1993 and we have raised both of our girls there. The house suits us, as my wife can no longer drive (medical reasons) it is perfectly located for her with all amenities close by. The girls are all but gone now so it is plenty big enough for us and we also have great neighbours all round. We simply have no desire to move away from a house we are very happy in.

I am fortunate to have had some lucky breaks (after taking some big risks) and have built up a bit of cash which is why last year I went out and bought a McLaren 12C Spider to go with my other cars. Does it look out of place on my drive? Yes, a little. Do I enjoy driving it? Damn right I do.

A friend of mine with similar earnings lives in a beautiful £1m+ house in the country and asks me why I haven't "upgraded" my house. He drives a leased BMW and hasn't had a decent holiday for a while due to high mortgage payments. No-one is right and no-one is wrong its just horses for courses and each to their own.

I feel far more for the people that have spent a fortune on an "executive" house and are then forced to drive around in a citroen Xara Picasso or if they want to save face with the neighbours a debadged 114i

I wouldn't call the house in the picture "modest". It's a (semi?) detached with 3-5 beds. If this is anywhere near London, depending on specific location, this may be a very expensive house indeed, like so: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope... and yes I picked a very expensive neighborhood but hopefully you get the point.
In fact, I'm more surprised if a see a banger/shed material barely hanging on in front of a 1m+ house. I mean surely owners can do better than disintegrating Golf/Micra/Corsa/Civic.

Also, I'm somewhat puzzled why would you think you'd need a giant mansion with oodles of space around it to have a supercar?

There's an assumption that these cars are parked outside the owners sole property. It could be the case that some have other larger properties in the country etc.

Having said that who cares.... if someone invests cleverly into a car good on them. If someone blows £120k on a fully loaded new RS6 I would think they are insane but good on them for doing what they want do to! We only live once smile

This is an interesting thread..

I know a guy very well who sold a business for about 2 million 5 years ago.. he basically divided the money up evenly and bought a number of new build houses for rental.. (got a good deal from the developer at the time too) and he kept one house for himself. (a 4 bed detached with double garage on the estate) he lives on the rental income and dables in other things.. and has one car.. a mint totally standard bayside blue R34 GTR.. very appreciating.

interesting how some would spend that money..

Isn't this just a symptom of how broken our home ownership-based economy has become in the South East?

I live in a street of mostly two up/two down Victorian terraced houses. It's noticeable now that there are quite a few Porsches, Range Rovers, etc parked outside on the street. When I moved to the street 10 years or so ago, my little BMW 130 was probably the most exotic car there, but then the houses were 300k and not 600k. Just around the corner there's a 3 bedroom semi with a *brand new* Bentley Continental in the car port. The sad reality is that in a lot of cases, you need almost half a million pounds to move from a 2/3 bed terrace to a 3/4 bed semi in the same part of the town, so clearly spending disposable income on a nice car is a lot easier than doubling your mortgage for most people.

I regularly see a white 650S Spider, G5 OSM parked outside a terraced house in Bury. Car must be worth multiples of the of the home. I always think these kinds of situations look really cool but security would always be a big issue for me

I think the average person that sees someone driving a supercar just expects them to have a massive house sat behind it.

This is the outcome, people discussing why they have decided to put as much money into their car as they have their house.

I would rather a nice house and then have the car on the drive if I can afford it but each to ones own I suppose.

I don't own a flash car, I have a Qashqai and the missus has an Aygo but I'm happy. biggrin

That's a very good point. I took the photo of the Lambo and Range Rover on the driveway. He does seem to 'rotate' his car collection which suggests they part of a larger collection held elsewhere.

Theres a fairly average house, probably a 3 bed, not too far from me and that has a lovely black ferrari 458 and a porsche boxter s on the drive.

I wont say where incase the owner is on here but its a 10 minute drive from chatham which is the craphole of all crapholes!
A bit harsh!! Ill have you know that some of neighbours actually own their Caravans outright (but not their cars).

I've not seen that car about, so im assuming its off to the Saint.Rood part of town.

Nothing narrow minded about that at all. I love cars as much as the next guy. But I'd sooner a decent place to live with an bang average car than a sthole with a flashy car outside. Just my view. Others are entitled to their as well.

Sounds like you are a couple of years ahead of us, we have, or will have, very similar circumstances.

Currently we have a tiny mortgage compared to net income having brought the current house before a previous property boom and both earning good money. We spend more on holidays than we do on the mortgage as the house is more than large enough for the four of us. Assuming a reasonable level of savings/debt live your life now not some distant point in the future that you may not make.

Both the mortgage and the kids will be gone in a few years, before we are forty five, and we are planning on living disgracefully as possible at that point.

Why would we want anywhere larger when it is just the two of us? I'd rather pay the deposit and first few years' mortgage payments for my kids to get them started in life.

A guy down the road from me had a Ferrari 360 back when they were ~£35k, he followed it up with a R8, although he has gone all sensible and brought a TT RS.

Back in the mid 80's, before the term 'supercar' was used & when I lived with my folks, my every day car was a Ferrari Daytona.

It was parked either in the drive or on the road.

I also came home in a variety of what would now be classed as a supercar - numerous Alpina BMW's, many Porsches, including a 959 & a 930 Turbo, as well as a 288 GTO, Range Rover, Lotus, Maserati. In fact anything that had an engine & needed a run out.

Also my mum had a Metro 6R4 in the garage for 12 months. An ex Tony Pond works car that we were offered for silly money (not much even in those days) which my dad refused to pay for because in his words it was just a noisy Metro!!!!

I lived in an ordinary house in Solihull & nobody batted an eyelid.

When I go back to my folks house i will dig out some of the photos that I hope are still in my mums loft.

They should make interesting viewing.
