vw with all their st build quality in past- no thanks as well..
will stick to petrol hondas and not worry too much about anything.Toyotas would be good also only if their design department wasnt stuck in 1990

Which were st build quality?
the ones with chocolate timing chains and the ones that use nearly as much oil as fuel etc , but they do have rather nice chrome plated plastic ...shame they struggle to pass emissions rules !!

Genuinely cannot recall the timing chain issues. If true, same could be said of others.

Don't most cars have chromed plastic?

Who cares about emissions rules when it is not just VW with an issue?

I tend to prefer it when my cars aren't on fire, so I chose Ford over Vauxhall.

I've always liked Fords. Not even just the performance models but they just make some generally pleasant cars to drive. Just a shame with the older ones rusting and rotting away. Ford really ballsed up there.

Vauxhall, on the other hand, i couldn't be less interested. I like fast cars so performance will always trump badge for me but even those have been pretty forgetful. Give me a rusty old Ford any day!

On balance I think Ford just shades it.

I'd take a Fiesta over a Corsa
Probably a Focus over an Astra though the new Vauxhall is well styled
Mondeo ahead of an Insignia though the Ford is getting quite large now

However I'd have a Camaro ahead of a Mustang.

Vauxhall, by a mile.

Ford have become what Peugeot used to be, back when they were good. The cars look ok, they ride/handle pretty well and they're made well 'enough'. They don't need to be built to a higher standard at the expense of kerb weight, and therefore ride/handling/driveability. Considering the dross they used to churn out, the first Mondeo and the mk1 Focus really were a revelation.

Vauxhalls are st to drive. The plastics feel cheap, the seats aren't usually very comfy, the handling/steering is usually atrocious and the engines are completely uninspiring. There will be the odd exception to the rule, but generally they're complete gash.

I'd say Vauxhall used to be ahead of Ford up until the mid-90's, then Ford pulled it back.

We've got an S-Max, and hand on heart it's one of the best cars I've ever driven. It's such a good all-rounder, I can't think of many manufacturers who've managed to pull off such a trick.

Late 80s/early 90s Vauxhall had some great stuff ( from my viewpoint ) in their showrooms

Nova GTE, Astra GTE/Astra GTE 16v/Opel Manta GTE/ Monza GSE/ Lotus Carlton/ Carlton GSi/ GSi 24V/ Cavalier Sri 16v/ Cavalier GSi/ Cavalier GSi 4x4 - then again, even Toyota had a good range of sporty motors back then, MR2, Corolla rwd and fwd sporty versions, Supra, Supra Turbo, Celica.

I went on one of the VXR track days a while back and I have to say I really enjoyed the Corsa Nurburgring - thought it was a great little car to drive, better for me than the Astra. Also drove the Insignia VXR ( brakes working very hard by the end ) but never got to drive the VXR8 sadly frown

Ford have always turned out better drivers' cars than Vauxhall but I always thought the GM engines were better.

The only engine (other than the Holden V8) is their 3.0 DTI.

Yeah, I would go with that.

I think both of them make good cars but I definitely have a preference that leans towards Vauxhall. It depends on a model to model basis.
I'd have a Fiesta over a Corsa, an Astra over a Focus and an Insignia over a Mondeo, for instance.

Personally I found a VXR8 or a VX220 a bit more interesting than a Mk1 Focus, but I do agree, I tend to prefer Ford's, ever so slightly to the 'equivalent' Vauxhall, but I've never owned a Ford, and haven't owned a Vauxhall since my first car, which was given to me.
Had a wheezy 1.3 Escort as my first car, then a 2.8 Galaxy from 99-2002 which was for a 2.8, pretty wheezy too. Got a cheap Focus now that I bought off a family friend, Ford's from about 94 onwards have aged better. Look at the MK1 Focus and the equivalent Astra. Or the 98 Mondeo and 98 Vectra. 99 Fiesta and 99 Corsa.
You do realise that the 2.8 is a VW VR6 lump don't you!
Yes he probably does. It then his daily is an s65 so a mere 2.8lt was probably gutless

Thank you badge snobs for ensuring the VX220 was attainable so much earlier than a lower powered Elise thumbup
I was once at a party and met a lad and his wife, the conversation got onto cars and he said how he had a VX220, I said we had an Elise, his wife then piped up and said "I bloody told him to save a bit longer and get a real one!"

I've owned two vauxhalls - an Astra 1.4Si (which was very good, in a capable, four seat, mild performance kind of way), and a 1.8i Vectra (1996), which, despite Clarksons ranting, was actually very pleasant to drive, and I remember both having very pleasant interiors, with nice instruments, and they both handled well for what they were.

Then, a year ago, I had an Insignia as a hire car. WTAF have they done. The instruments glowed the most intense red, even turned down, and it was flimsy inside, it was genuinely horrid. Drove OK but it was like sitting in a massive fanny. Interior-wise, they've gone backwards.

Never owned a Ford. I love the old ones as racecars (anglia, cortina) but never has the desire to own one. Rented a US Mustang though and that was great, even with it's flimsy non 5.0 engine.

It was actually not bad for the car it was, it just didn't have any low end grunt which made it terrible for around town driving.

I would challenge that. In the 80s the Cavaliers, as they moved from the Ascona based rear wheel drive (not a bad car at all, essentially a four door Manta) to Mk2 FWD, were ahead of Ford by a mile. At that time the Cortina was on its last legs and replaced by the Sierra which early on was not a great car, stodgy is the term I'd use. I was right in the mix of the company car debate at the time (plus we would test out each others' cars) and those that had the choice generally plumped for Vauxhalls as they were more fun to drive.

back in the day I thought the cavalier GSIs were ace, 150bhp! Better than the Fords of the day, liked the Astra as well, the Sierra I had was awful but the Mondeo was a good car and turned things around for Ford, the Vectra was woeful.

These days a Ford would be my choice.

That's how I look at it. GSi2000 was an awesome car! I didn't mind the Sierra, but it always seemed a bit old fashioned when I was a kid (mind you, so did a mk2 Cavalier). Mk3 Astra was lightyears ahead of any of the Escorts for me too. I hated the mk5 Escort with a passion. fking hateful things.

Mondeo turned things round for sure. Had an ST200 once, was a good car overall.
