Which "classic" hot hatch would you most like to own?

Ot Also was disappointed by the Mk 2 Golf GTI 16v which didn't feel that quick but it was a relatively new car so possibly still had a tight engine?
They were noticeably quicker once past about 25,000 miles. If I recall correctly either Autocar or Motor re-figured their long term test car at that sort of mileage and it was about a second quicker to 60. And they always needed revving out to deliver their best. Lowtimer said:

Reenault 5 Turbo 2, rwd, engine in the back and 160bhp in a car that looks seriously mean
I don't think that you can have this, it was always a HS and not really comparable with the mainstream hot hatches.I drove a Delta HF Turbo in about 1992, bloody awesome machine. The only snag was that the insurance companies had woken up by then and a quote of £900 was enough to put me off, 25 years ago.
Probably in a minority here, but of all the ones I've tried, I'd have a Mk2 XR2 again. Not because it had the best performance, but it was easiest to enjoy what it did offer, and a good all-rounder.
Never tried the R5 Turbo but a friend had one and sold it 'before I lose my licence'. Ie, very fast in their day.

I always love the slightly quirkier, often flawed stuff. Really wanted a dhaihatsu charade gtti for a while. Then a polo g40 became my obsession. Would have loved a civic vti too. 8000rpm at the time was a rare thing.
Proper hot hatches have passed me by a bit but I have a real hankering for a 105xsi 1.4 or a yellow 205 rallye nowadays.

That's an HSR. 215ish bhp.
Hmm, you're right, the HS was 135bhp, I read the wrong bit - but this page only says 150hp for the HSR ? http://www.classiccars4sale.net/classic-car-review...This too: http://www.classicandsportscar.com/guides/classic-...
Article at the time suggest 15hp over the HS too: http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/...
The rally HSrs had a 2.6 engine and were somewhere around 240hp

Only in rally trim, road cars has much less, eg Escort RS 1800 with the BDA engine only had around 115 bhp as a road car, the competion cars had around 240-260, same sort of thing for all those group 4 homologation cars.mk2 golf GTI's were good but just too capable and dull. Loved the look of RS Turbo's but just couldn't look by the horrible CVH engine.
So for me it would be the 1.9 205. The steering feel was sublime.
And in 2nd place would be the mk2 Astra valver just for that engine.
Unfortunately I never owned any of them. At the peak of their popularity I was a skint student and even if I could afford the car I would never have been able to afford the insurance. So all the above from driving examples from friends and family.
