Indeed, but looking at its late-70's rivals, it wasn't that crap. It was roomy (me plus 9 to get home from the pub was my record), had a great ride and reasonable handling, though steering was a bit woolly. Engines were all nails, but tough and reliable. Rust killed mine before its 10th birthday.

Wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding but, like the Beetle before it, was designed with a 'cruising maximum' speed. So it would do abt 75 (indicated 85) on a flat motorway quite happily.

Smooth little ohc engine was a revelation after the agricultural A series in my Mum's Minis. I did 40k miles in that car in 18 months and loved it dearly. Still have the front numberplate somewhere.

Incidentally, when did manufacturers switch from quoting 0-50 (which they proudly claimed my Triumph could do in 9.6 seconds!) to 0-60?

I know it is crass to ask but I have to know, a few people have mentioned some quite spicy cars as their first, Impreza, 350Z, Supra, S6 etc.. Were these bought and insured as 17 year olds and if so, how many 0's on the insurance premium?

My dad took it with a broken water pump when his car wouldn't start one day and it overheated and he kept going until someone told him he was on fire (plastic fuel line melted). It burnt out on the north circular around Walthemstow and shut the road for a day whilst they put it out and then resurfaced the road.
